The Archers September 9th 2010: The Golf Club Dinner

The Preparations

With both Lilian and Jennifer rushing around getting their hair done and clothes spruced up, all poor Kathy can do is dry clean her dress. After all, she’s a worker, not a guest.

No-one really seems to be looking forward to the Golf Club’s dinner dance but, for one reason or another, they find themselves having to go.

Lilian gives good advice:

“Just do what I do … have a few drinks. It dulls the pain no end”

And Kathy and Kenton are actually being nice to each other (she thinks he looks very James Bond, he thinks she also looks very James Bond, but in a dress …!).

But ominous ahoy!

“I will be a support and a credit to you”

Ah. When Kenton utters something along those lines, you just know he’ll do the complete opposite.

(And who knew that Underwoods alter clothes? I was most excited to find that out.)

The Dinner

Lots of small talk (seemingly the cost of taps is outrageous), spotting of people best avoided, and dancing to Abba and the Bee Gees.

Brian and Jennifer clock Benedict and Amanda, then also spy Benedict’s ex-wife Amelia.

Matt and Lilian make a beeline for Jennifer and Brian (well, who else can they talk to. All the others still think Matt’s criminality is catching).

The ever charming Brian:

“Lilian - looking lovely as ever! … All comes from within … no artifice”

Lilian as ever spot-on:

“Matt and I are social kryptonite”

“Anything by Olivia Newton john and I’m off“

And Kenton’s being nice to Toni-Ann. Who is Lee’s girlfriend. Lee is the golf professional. Which means he works with Kathy, and helped Jamie get a job. And also has a ‘harem’ of women he teaches.

First thing to kick off is Amanda and Amelia having a spat outside (which Jennifer most annoying drags Lilian, and us, away from).

Then Kenton kicks off when he’s told that Amanda was flirting with Lee

“oh that man - how many women does he want!”

Which results in Kenton throwing a punch at Lee, and being driven home early by an icily furious Kathy.

The Aftermath

Obviously quite drunk (Kenton couldn’t remember what je’d just said, struggles to get his seatbelt off and couldn’t find his key), Kenton’s done it yet again.

He has a point that Kathy told him to enjoy himself, but he also fails to understand that this was not a licence to flirt, get pissed and punch one of Kathy’s colleagues.

“It’s always the same thing with you”

Well Kenton, Kathy can also say the same about you.
