Clarrie keeps up appearances
Literally.
Eddie remarks that she’s looking smart – even though she only has a trip to the job centre.
[Eddie] “We’ll you’ve got to feel good in yourself”
Quite right.
And Clarrie seems a bit brighter. She’s happy just to have a reason to be up and about in the morning.
And seems job centres no longer have vacancy boards – it’s all touch screens.
But that doesn’t help Clarrie find work. There’s nothing on offer – computerised or not.
[Eddie] “Clarrie’s not designed to sit around doing nothing … she’s willing to work”
[Jolene] “Unlike some”
Jane Harvey has a bad knee
So has let Oliver down with not being able to do her Village shop shift.
Jill’s birthday
And Clarrie forgot to get her a card – for the first time ever!
Jill doesn’t seem too perturbed.
She also didn’t seem too bothered that Kenton chose moving in with Jolene over having lunch with her and Elizabeth for her birthday. She’ll see him at a birthday tea at Shula.
Jill’s right that it feels like a lifetime since her 80th last year.
Elizabeth and Jill reminisce about how Nigel (remember him???) made a speech, calling Jill “materfamilias” (which Elizabeth reckoned was better than Nigel sneakily calling Julia “mumsy”).
Clarrie still blames Emma …
Clarrie was kept awake last night thinking about Will and Nic.
[Clarrie] “I mean there’s no denying he can be aggressive Eddie … there’s different ways of hurting. If he goes ranting at her ex he’ll ruin the best thing that’s ever happened to him, after George … a bit of him is still holding onto Emma …Oh, if only Emma…”
[Eddie] “Look, Emma happened, fact”
Clarrie isn’t one for letting go, but Eddie reckons Will made up for not getting Emma by having his inheritance.
[Clarrie] “There’s some things money can’t compensate for”
But Eddie also reckons Ed and Will are grown up now, so they should just be left to it.
Easier said than done.
Clarrie smells trouble (and probably heartache for Nic).
Kenton moves in with Jolene
His collection of vinyl seems to be matched in quantity of his books.
He and Elizabeth reckon they’re the book worms of the family.
[Kenton] “Shula and Dave have got their horses and cows”
(*snort*!)
Elizabeth is wondering aloud to Kenton if he means it this time.
[Kenton] “I’m too old and creaky to move this lot again”
Seems Kenton has his stuff spread all over the place, Even Jill has a room of it.
[Jill] “He thinks he travels light but he doesn’t”
Over at Jolene’s, Kenton funds that Jolene is not overjoyed at the sight of all his vinyl.
And his books.
And his (ahem) “satirical comics”.
But she settles down soon enough, She has her man:
[Jolene] “I’ve been very patient. I’ve waited a long time to have you under my roof”
Well. Not that long, really.
Elizabeth feels the emptiness
While she says she’s glad for Kenton, she’ll also miss him. She’ll even miss waiting to hear him get in (late) from working at Jaxx.
[Elizabeth] “I quite liked it. Feeling I’d counted everyone into the house”
And now:
[Elizabeth] “Oh … another empty room”
Even Lewis is holding back from being an honorary Archer. He won’t even join Elizabeth in her sitting room.
(blimey – multiple sitting rooms. There’s a price to pay for all that space …)
And on her and Nigel’s wedding anniversary last week:
[Elizabeth] “I felt so crushingly lonely … I’ve lost my best friend, as well as my husband … no-one to sit down with at the end of the day to share the little triumphs”
The one that got away from Eddie Grundy
[Jolene] “He’s moved in today”
[Eddie] “I guessed. Jammy so and so …”
[Jolene] “Oh come on now, in another life, eh Eddie …”
No support for Kenton
It’s been a while since Kenton’s family did a bit of Kenton bashing, but here we go (and now Jolene’s included):
[Elizabeth] “I don’t understand how Jolene fell for someone so quickly after Sid … I don’t think I’ll ever be able to love again”
[Jill] “Nor me. With love comes loyalty”
Jill also isn’t happy that Kenton got together with Jolene so quickly after he’d split up with Kathy.
She reckons Kenton and Jolene won’t last.
[Elizabeth] “For what it’s worth mum, I think he does love Jolene”
[Jill] “Maybe. But is there real commitment there? I doubt it”
