The Archers Thursday 6th October 2011: Clive’s return has not gone unnoticed

  • David isn’t amused
  • Neither is Mike
  • Nor is Rhys
  • Ploughing competition time again
  • Lines that came to Bert in the night
  • Mike takes the Michael out of Kenton
  • …. Kenton showers twice sometimes
  • Rhys for the Christmas Concert?
  • Mike got the green job

David isn’t amused

Seems Ruth couldn’t go to the book club last night, but Usha phoned her first thing to tell her the news about Clive’s return.

David is aghast.

[David] “has the man has no shame?!?”

Later on, in The Bull, David is indignant of the chat about Clive.

After all, Clive has directly caused untold grief for his aunty, sister and mum.

[David] “It’s not the subject of title tattle. There are still too many victims in the village”

Neither is Mike

As Betty (his first wife) was held by Clive along with Debbie and co during the robbery. And she was stressed out for years after.

Nor is Rhys

Who has to be told the whole grotty tale of Clive from scratch.

That Clive used a shotgun.

That Susan went to prison for six months.

[Rhys] “she seems so respectable!”

[Bert] “But Clive coerced her and she weakened, they’re a very tribal family, the Horrobins”

That George had tipped the Police onto Clive.

[Rhys] “Good grief, we’ve gone from spaghetti westerns to the godfather”
That Clive had attached Shula and Alistair’s horses.

That Clive had set fire to Christine and George’s house when Christine and Jill were in it.

[Rhys] “No! The nutter!”

Seems Rhys has a lot to learn about Ambridge.

Ploughing competition time again

After having come third in the overall competition last year – Bert’s determined to better this year. And part of that will be to make sure he doesn’t break down.

But.

[Bert] “Vernon Goddings just acquired an early 60s English Fordson Super”

[David] “Has he by jove!”

That doesn’t sound good for Bert. So one assumes that’s a darn good tractor Vernon Goddings has got?

I had to look them up.

Lines that came to Bert in the night

“His super major hits the ditch

“Vernon Goddings takes a skidding

“The judges think he’s on the drink

“And I ends up with the Beckwell cup”

[Bert] “It’s national poetry day, you know”

Actually, I didn’t.

So, nice to hear Bert’s contribution.

Mike takes the Michael out of Kenton

As does Rhys.

They both see him moving boxes of magazines out of Jolene – so jest him about him moving out already and what type of magazines they are …

So Kenton tells Rhys to “bike off”, though as Mike points out:

[Mike] “You can’t expect to live a private life in a public place, everyone’s going to know your business”

Kenton does admit he misses the gossip and space of Lower Loxley …especially as he had his own wing.

Tying to offload his 4x4 magazines (nothing untoward there then, just a bit nerdy) onto David and Ruth’s loft (to which they say no):

[Kenton] “I sense that she’s running out of patience, she keeps stubbing her toes on my many boxes of treasures”

[David] “Has she cottoned onto your cheesy feet yet, or hasn’t she past the romantic stage?”

Well, actually …

…. Kenton showers twice sometimes

Though he did bump into Fallon without a towel to cover his modesty.

She must be loving the new living arrangements (!).

Rhys for the Christmas Concert?

Seems Rhys has sung before, so once Lynda finds out, he’ll have no choice but to join.

I hope it goes well.

I’m going to miss the panto shenanigans.

Mike got the green job

It’s only a day or so a week – but Mike is chuffed he got the manager of the green burial site job.

Even though Jim will be his line manager.

And even though Clarrie had been going for it as well …

The Archers Friday 20th may 2011: Now David again blames himself

click the title above, or the 'read more' link below the bullet points, to read the full post on this eavesdropping episode

  • Betty’s hen, Ginger
  • Ruth must be ever so tired of repeating herself
  • Eddie reckons No. 3 is being done “on the cheap”
  • Can Jill sort this one?
  • When’s Kenton going to come clean?

Betty’s hen, Ginger

Freddie is writing a story for school, about the time Eleanor (Nigel’s bird) escaped, and killed a hen.

Elizabeth remembers that it was Betty Tucker’s hen, Ginger, that Eleanor killed.

Poor Ginger.

Ruth must be ever so tired of repeating herself

David’s suffering badly from Elizabeth telling him to “go to hell” after he told her it was his idea for him and Nigel to go up on that roof.

[David] “I could have prevented it … if I hadn’t suggested it … it wouldn’t have happened”

[Ruth] “You suggested it. You didn't make Nigel do it … it was just one of those terrible things that happened … all those 'if onlys' don’t mean you’re responsible for what happened”

True enough, Ruth. She’s also right that Nigel knew the risks of his own roof, even more so that David.

[Ruth] “It was terrible fluke, a combination of so many things. You can’t take it all on yourself. It’s not fair”

But David’s not listening. He’s making himself busy with farm work, so Ruth is wasting her breath.

Eddie reckons No. 3 is being done “on the cheap”

He’s one to talk!

He reckons the builder Matt is using is known for cutting corners.

He’s also annoyed that the builders have made it impossible to walk on the pavement outside No.3, as it’s full of stuff.

Even someone with a mobility scooter couldn’t get by.

(as if Eddie would normally notice or care!)

Can Jill sort this one?

Ruth tells Jill what happened between David and Elizabeth.

[Ruth] “He made it sound like he was totally to blame – like he’d given Nigel no option”

Jill doesn’t take sides, and tries to get Elizabeth to talk over the phone.

But even wonder-mum Jill can’t get Elizabeth to calm down.

Ruth has another try at soothing/reasoning David:

[Ruth] “David, please. You’ve suffered enough. You’ve got to forgive yourself for what has happened.”

[David] “Elizabeth will never forgive me. So how am I supposed to live with that?”

Time and Jill might change Jill’s mind?

Either way, it’s meant David and Ruth have had to cancel their night out.

Pity.

That only happens once every few years.

When’s Kenton going to come clean?

So David has told (what he sees) as the truth about Nigel’s death, and that it’s his (David’s) fault.

When’s Kenton going to unburden about that knot?
