Ed’s not providing: Mon 08.10.12

The Archers Monday 8th October 2012
  • Even the guinea pig doesn’t want those biscuits
  • Fallon’s still depressed
  • Lynda’s (forcibly) recruiting
  • Jim’s had a late night
  • David tries to support Ed
  • Britain in Bloom rumbles on
  • Ed has chocolate, and remembers the carefree days

Even the guinea pig doesn’t want those biscuits

Things are still very grim and Ed and Emma’s.

There’s not enough bread. Now not enough soup. And only just enough cheese for Ed to have a tiny wee bit.

But he can have some biscuits.

The horrible ones that neither Ed nor George like – even the guinea pig doesn’t want them.

For pity sake – GO BACK TO WORK EMMA!!!!

Fallon’s still depressed

Now that Jolene and Kenton are back, Fallon no longer has the freedom to manage The Bull as she’s wish to.

Though I suspect her depression might have something to do with Rhys being away in Wales.

Lynda’s (forcibly) recruiting

Lynda’s after both Kenton and Fallon to star in her village extravaganza.

[Lynda] “Marvellous, I can kill two birds in one bar.”

[Kenton] “I hope not, we’ve only just the carpet cleaned.”

I think (especially Kenton) will take a heck of a lot of persuading.

He doesn’t sound keen at all.

Jim’s had a late night

He and Jazzer sat up late last night watching their film. And drinking lager.

And doesn’t Jim feel awful today!

He reckons Jazzer and he are “brainwashing” each other.

David tries to support Ed

[David] “I don’t think it’s ever been tougher than this year.”

Though David admits both Phil and Dan would have also said the same about any of their years.

Only difference is the sheer cost of living these days.

Obviously spotting that not all’s well at Ed and Emma’s, David tells Ed he can talk to him anytime he likes.

[David quoting Dan] “And may the weather be kinder to farmers.”

Well, think Ed needs more than a bit of sunshine.

Britain in Bloom rumbles on

It may be over for the rest of us, but Lynda still has Britain in Bloom very much in mind.

She’s giving Kenton a row about not keeping The Bull’s outside as tidy as it could be.

After all, Ambridge is going to get a plaque for placing this year.

Ed has chocolate, and remembers the carefree days

Fallon catches Ed coming out of the village shop, gulping down a chocolate bar.

[Fallon] “And they make out chocolate’s a girl thing!”

Seems Ed is wishing for more carefree times. They get onto how he used to sing in their band. Now he doesn’t even sing in the shower.

[Ed] “I can’t believe we were in a band … young, free, single.”

[Fallon, not exactly revelling in being single] “You can have too much of a good thing.”

[Ed] “You can too little as well  …”

Though Ed loves Emma, and being a family, it’s not exactly a barrel of laughs at the moment.

[Ed] “It’s just, it’s tough working it all out, right now, it’s  … look, don’t say this to anyone … right now the business isn’t paying its way. I’ve had to cut what I’m I;m paying myself and things are pretty tight … I hate feeling I’m not providing for them. I hate letting them down … if working harder would make any difference, it’s what I’d do … and Will, he just flashes his money all around …”

Oh dear.

Ed really is hitting rock bottom.

Matt and Lilian, en Paris: Fri 28.09.12

The Archers Friday 28th September 2012
  • Matt loves Lilian
  • Christine feels sorry for Jazzer
  • Rhys and Fallon to star in the Christmas Extravaganza?
  • Christine’s winding up Jim
  • Joe’s teeth are on the beer mat
  • Jim’s not impressed with Much Ado

Matt loves Lilian

[Lilian] “Taking a tour of Paris in a chauffeured 2 CV, how wonderfully ridiculous!”

Lilian is loving her time in Paris with Matt.

[Matt] “This trip is about pure pleasure.”

Matt’s really pulling out every stop.

[Matt] “We forget to say how much we love each to each other. This is my way of saying it.”

Ah, if only that was Matt’s only motive. Paul’s return is more likely …

But Lilian seems to have fallen for it. She’s having a ball, and remembering all the good things in life.

[Matt] “Am I one of the good guys. You do know that, Lilian.”

Indeed she does.

She suggests they return to their hotel room, quick sharp.

Wonder if Paris will be enough to keep Matt in Lilian’s mind above Paul?

Christine feels sorry for Jazzer

[Christine] “At least we have homes, I saw Jazzer this morning.”

Hmmm.

Christine did seem to enjoy Jazzer’s company the other day.

I wonder ...

Rhys and Fallon to star in the Christmas Extravaganza?

Seems one can’t move around Ambridge for catching sight of one of Lynda’s poster advertising the Christmas Shakespearian Extravaganza auditions.

As Fallon and Rhys relax and listen to records (well, probably downloads, rather than records), they both admit they’re going to audition for the Christmas show.

Harry and Fallon, but with Rhys and Fallon?

We think they’re falling for each other … they kiss … then … nothing …

Surely not?

Not after Fallon’s made Rhys a mixed tape (well, CD) for his journey back home for a visit.

That’s proper commitment, that is.

Christine’s winding up Jim

Christine and Jim are again talking about Borchester Life magazine.

Christine seems to have changed her tune. She now thinks writing for the magazine might not be right for Jim after all.

[Christine] “Is a touch beyond … well, maybe it’s just  not you.”

[Jim] “I certainly like to think I’m a man whose words appeal to a wider market.”

Ah, gauntlet thrown. Jim’s bound to do it now!

Joe’s teeth are on the beer mat

Seems they’re still giving him gip.

Jim’s not impressed with Much Ado

[Jim] “Explores the obstacles to young love, and the merry war between the sexes … a fuss about not lot.”

Joe concurs.

[Joe] “I don’t want to watch men, in tights, kissing in the village hall … good old fashioned blood and gore, that would be worth buying a ticket for!”

(begs the question about what venue would Joe prefer to watch men, in tights, kissing)

The Archers Sunday 9th October 2011: The Harvest supper 2011

(James and Leonie don’t make it … hurrah!)

  • There were never such devoted sisters …
  • Jim’s trippin’
  • Jim’s heartbroken
  • Will comes clean about Emma
  • Jim's not allowed to drop quiche, Tony to avoid coiffing
  • Christmas Around the World with Jim
  • Robert’s a bit of a dirty auld yin

There were never such devoted sisters …

Tony and Pat are at the Harvest Supper – but Tony is sounding a bit dour.

[Pat] “We’ve been given a breathing space, thanks to Lilian”

[Tony] “We’ll have to pay her back, you know”

[Pat] “I don’t think she’ll press us for it”

[Tony] “She’s very generous, unlike my other sister …”

[Pat] “One out of two isn’t bad”

Seems Tom is meeting with Underwoods tomorrow – which makes Pat a bit depressed (as it won’t make a difference for her and Tony) – at which point Tony chides Pat that she’s now “looking on the dark side”, and that they’re out to try and put their troubles behind them for a night.

They’ll be needing more cider …

Jim’s trippin’

[Tony] “You don’t to be too full to trip the light fantastic”

[Jim] “Tripping is about right where dancing and I are concerned”

Seems Jim doesn’t dance, so just wants to sit and admire Ruth’s (last minute*) decorations.

(*last minute as Pip offered Brookfield, then her “enthusiasm waned” leaving it all down to poor Ruth)

Jim’s heartbroken

First – that Lynda has announced Leonie and James will be at the Harvest Supper.

[Jim] “They are a menace … they nearly had me disqualified from the flower and produce show … moved my tomatoes, out them into the middle of the flower arrangements for their photo ...siad it made for a more edgy composition”

But – on the news later that James and Leonie can’t make it, after delays on the motorway, Jim is slightly chirpier.

So – it’s left to Lynda:

[Lynda] “with my restaurant’s critic’s hat on”

To write up for James and Leonie’s book, and Robert to takes the photos.

A thankless task on all fronts …

Will comes clean about Emma

[Will] “There’s something I want to talk to you about … just that I’ve been thinking .. you’ve been so straight with me about what’s been going on with you and Andre … I think I should try to be the same … about Emma”

Yikes! Is there ever a more terrifying phrase to be uttered than hearing your partner say they want “to talk”.

And worse still that it seems to be Will wanting to talk to Nic about Emma.

So – here’s what he had to say:

[Will] “How much does it bother you that Emma and I were once married?”

[Nic] “ … it doesn’t. That’s all in the past.”

[Will] “Is it?”
(eek!)

[Nic] “Isn’t it?”

[Will] “Well not for Emma it seems … otherwise why is she so sharp with you?”

[Nic] “Only sometimes”

[Will] “Too many times”

Nic reckons it’s for her to deal with Emma being harsh to her, but Will is worried that he doesn’t stand up for Nic as often as he should. Or, worse still, that Nic doesn’t know when he does stick up for her.

[Will] “I’m absolutely on your side Nic. Always, always.”

And then, he tells Nic what he really feels about Emma.

(which actually isn’t much of a revelation – more of a clearing of the air)

[Nic] “It must have been hard, though. I know how much Emma hurt you”

[Will] “She did … I don’t still have feelings for her, not anymore. You do believe me, do you?”

[Nic] “It’s just that I know how long I know it took me to get over Andrew”

[Will] “It’s taken me a long time too, maybe I wasn’t always quite honest with myself about that … I am over her. I truly am. And I can see her for what she is. I love you Nic. I love you. And that’s all that matters to me now”

[Nic] “And it’s all that matters to me. And you don’t have to worry about Emma. I can handle her “

Aw.

The sound of wedding bells is back on in my mind, then.

Jim not allowed to drop quiche, Tony to avoid coiffing

Robert and Lynda are trying to pose Jim, Tony and Pat for a photo for Leonie and James’ book.

Jim’s pretending to be eating – but is told not to drop the quiche (as if he will – he’s starving!).

And as for Tony.

[Lynda] “or maybe raising your glass to your lips rather than actual coiffing”

And Pat:

[Lynda] “Just look animated Pat, like you’re fascinated by their conversation”

(as if – Pat isn’t an actress!)

[Jim] “I mean this is photography we’re talking about, not like sitting for Rembrandt!”

There then ensues a slight disagreement about whether photography is an art form. Which it clearly is.
(I do declare an interest – my business partner is a photographer. You know I never plug - but just this once Amicus Photography)

Christmas Around the World with Jim

Lynda was trying to get all who was within earshot to volunteer their talents to the Christmas concert Christmas Around the World.

(I’m still devastated that there is no Panto)

She’s targeting Jim – who, despite being a big supporter of community projects, states he doesn’t like them when he has to “make a fool of himself”.

[Lynda] “But you won’t. A man of culture and learning like you”

[Jim] “I can’t sing, and I don’t play a musical instrument”

[Tony] “Juggling?”

[Pat] “Bit of tap dancing?”

[Jim] “My cultural interests are historical, philosophical and literary”

[Lynda] “There you are then! You can read a poem!”

[Tony] “But, Bert will be doing that, won’t he?”

[Lynda] “Bert? He’s hardly the poet laureate is he?”

(ooh – bit harsh on ol’ Bert there)

But Jim does relent – and agrees to read a poem.

He reels a few Latin sounding poets (Ovid, Virgil and a few lesser known ones I couldn’t write down in time).

[Pat] “Yes but Jim, you’re not going to read them in Latin, are you?”

[Jim] “Of course! That’s how they were written”

Oh joy.

I’d prefer a wee Santa ditty, myself.

Robert’s a bit of a dirty auld yin

Cheeky monkey.

Everyone’s keen to see the photos he’s taken at the Harvest Supper and the Barn Dance,
Robert’s not keen for anyone to look at the Barn Dance ones. He reckons they’re not up to much.

[Tony] “Nothing worth looking at? I wouldn’t say so!”

[Pat] “Are they all of Sabrina Thwaite?”

[Robert] “Well, she didn’t mind posing, that was the thing Lyndee”

[Pat] “She does like to show off her new outfits …”

[Jim] “ … how they stay on is the mystery”

[Tony] “I suppose they cling to all the right places”

Lynda is aghast.

She thinks the photos of the Barn Dance are totally unsuitable for James and Leonie’s book. So, she takes back the camera.

[Jim] “She’s quite wrong. Those pictures of Sabrina are the only thing that might sell their wretched book …”

The Archers Thursday 6th October 2011: Clive’s return has not gone unnoticed

  • David isn’t amused
  • Neither is Mike
  • Nor is Rhys
  • Ploughing competition time again
  • Lines that came to Bert in the night
  • Mike takes the Michael out of Kenton
  • …. Kenton showers twice sometimes
  • Rhys for the Christmas Concert?
  • Mike got the green job

David isn’t amused

Seems Ruth couldn’t go to the book club last night, but Usha phoned her first thing to tell her the news about Clive’s return.

David is aghast.

[David] “has the man has no shame?!?”

Later on, in The Bull, David is indignant of the chat about Clive.

After all, Clive has directly caused untold grief for his aunty, sister and mum.

[David] “It’s not the subject of title tattle. There are still too many victims in the village”

Neither is Mike

As Betty (his first wife) was held by Clive along with Debbie and co during the robbery. And she was stressed out for years after.

Nor is Rhys

Who has to be told the whole grotty tale of Clive from scratch.

That Clive used a shotgun.

That Susan went to prison for six months.

[Rhys] “she seems so respectable!”

[Bert] “But Clive coerced her and she weakened, they’re a very tribal family, the Horrobins”

That George had tipped the Police onto Clive.

[Rhys] “Good grief, we’ve gone from spaghetti westerns to the godfather”
That Clive had attached Shula and Alistair’s horses.

That Clive had set fire to Christine and George’s house when Christine and Jill were in it.

[Rhys] “No! The nutter!”

Seems Rhys has a lot to learn about Ambridge.

Ploughing competition time again

After having come third in the overall competition last year – Bert’s determined to better this year. And part of that will be to make sure he doesn’t break down.

But.

[Bert] “Vernon Goddings just acquired an early 60s English Fordson Super”

[David] “Has he by jove!”

That doesn’t sound good for Bert. So one assumes that’s a darn good tractor Vernon Goddings has got?

I had to look them up.

http://www.classicvintagetractors.co.uk/vintage-tractors-for-sale/fordson-tractors.html

Lines that came to Bert in the night

“His super major hits the ditch

“Vernon Goddings takes a skidding

“The judges think he’s on the drink

“And I ends up with the Beckwell cup”

[Bert] “It’s national poetry day, you know”

Actually, I didn’t.

So, nice to hear Bert’s contribution.

Mike takes the Michael out of Kenton

As does Rhys.

They both see him moving boxes of magazines out of Jolene – so jest him about him moving out already and what type of magazines they are …

So Kenton tells Rhys to “bike off”, though as Mike points out:

[Mike] “You can’t expect to live a private life in a public place, everyone’s going to know your business”

Kenton does admit he misses the gossip and space of Lower Loxley …especially as he had his own wing.

Tying to offload his 4x4 magazines (nothing untoward there then, just a bit nerdy) onto David and Ruth’s loft (to which they say no):

[Kenton] “I sense that she’s running out of patience, she keeps stubbing her toes on my many boxes of treasures”

[David] “Has she cottoned onto your cheesy feet yet, or hasn’t she past the romantic stage?”

Well, actually …

…. Kenton showers twice sometimes

Though he did bump into Fallon without a towel to cover his modesty.

She must be loving the new living arrangements (!).

Rhys for the Christmas Concert?

Seems Rhys has sung before, so once Lynda finds out, he’ll have no choice but to join.

I hope it goes well.

I’m going to miss the panto shenanigans.

Mike got the green job

It’s only a day or so a week – but Mike is chuffed he got the manager of the green burial site job.

Even though Jim will be his line manager.

And even though Clarrie had been going for it as well …
