The Parish Community Council to bed BL 03.04.12
The Archers Tuesday 3rd April 2012
Tony’s kitted up and raring to go
But no-one will let him do anything.
And Pat won’t let him help with the trays.
Tony is also worried about Tom running himself ragged.
But there’s nothing he can do about that. Not while everyone is telling him to sit down and relax until he’s completely ready to return to work.
(quite right too!)
Ronnie likes strong women
Ronnie is the chap from which Chris is buying the Farrier business.
Neil and Susan were talking about how proud they are of Chris, then started talking about how Ronnie met his wife.
Seems Ronnie met her at a Summer Fayre, where he was impressed by her prowess on the test your strength machine. After he’d seen her technique, he married her a mere 3 months later.
Wow. That’s a man who knows what he wants.
Lily is now obsessed
With bell ringing.
She’s still going to practice, and will even get to ring the bells on St George’s day.
A very Special Parish Council meeting
Actually, Oliver points out that he brought Darjeeling with him.
When they’re settled, they get down to the business of discussing the Fields in Trust.
Seems there’s a scheme which uses the Jubilee and the Olympics to help safeguard recreational areas of land – it’s called the QE II Field program. Once a community secures that status for the land, it can’t be built in, and they can access grants to create or improve facilities. The ownership of the land stays with the current owner, but they will have a legally binding contract, and a deed of dedication “to protect in perpetuity”.
So – the village green?
Nope, already protected.
The cricket pitch?
Nope, already protected.
The playground?
Nope, also already protected (as a memorial).
Then Jill comes up trumps.
She suggests the land between the shop and the river, which children have always played on. Including David, Kenton and Neil.
But there’s a big BUT.
That land belongs to Borchester Land.
Most seem to see that as not being a problem – it’d be a good spot to have Bonfire night on (to stop Hilary Noakes moaning, if nothing else):
But Jill is horrified that they’ll have to ask Brian to gift the land.
Jill still hasn’t forgiven Brian for his rather obvious (and cynical) attempt to buy good PR for BL during the start of the Super Dairy debate.
Blimey, Jim has changed his tune.
It sounded like Jill as a very lone voice in the debate.
Tilly Button is in hand
On the topic of the James/Leonie fly over:
But it’s not all bad news. Seems Tilly has been “spoken to, very firmly” by Brown Owl. So no naughtiness from the Brownies, then.
Oliver tells how Jolene has been making her regulars practising waving for the flyover (out in the car park), in the shape of a bull. But as they’re practising at night, they’re only waving at the night sky at the moment.
(does Lynda not recall that she and Robert run a B&B, so surely her deep desired to be photographed is of as much commercial concern as The Bull?)
Jim resorts to Derek Fletcher
Though Jim was going great guns with his Lent promise (to make as many genuine compliments to as many people as possible), he’s now feeling the strain. He’s running out of people to compliment.

[Pat] “You have to appreciate love, that’s why Tom’s being cautious, and why Helen won’t even let you do the pans”

[Jim] “Village hall tea, that mysterious compound of coal dust and floor sweepings”
Actually, Oliver points out that he brought Darjeeling with him.

[Neil] “Mind, before they put the fence up, you had to stop the ball rolling down the land”
But there’s a big BUT.
That land belongs to Borchester Land.
Most seem to see that as not being a problem – it’d be a good spot to have Bonfire night on (to stop Hilary Noakes moaning, if nothing else):
[Jim] “Anything to spare a repetition of the Burned village green debacle!”
But Jill is horrified that they’ll have to ask Brian to gift the land.
[Jill] “Oh no …!”
Jill still hasn’t forgiven Brian for his rather obvious (and cynical) attempt to buy good PR for BL during the start of the Super Dairy debate.
[Oliver] “But sometimes a parish council has to accept realpolitik”
[Jim] “So why not try and get something good out of them before the chance goes forever?”
Blimey, Jim has changed his tune.
It sounded like Jill as a very lone voice in the debate.
Tilly Button is in hand
On the topic of the James/Leonie fly over:
[Jim] “How splendid, our very own festival of noise!”
[Jim] “Goodness me, were you expecting to be beamed up?”
[Lynda] “It would be a shame if the whole flight was taken over by commercial concerns …”
[Jim] “And since his socks were the least offense thing about him, I had to say how nice they were”
[Jill, giggling again. Which she seems to be doing a lot at the moment. Which is nice] “You made his afternoon!”

Jim concerns a tie shop assistant 20.02.12
The Archers Tuesday 20th March 2012
Let Brian eat cake!
As there’s no biscuits.
Andrew is a “silly man”
According to Jennifer.
Andrew Eagleton is on the BL board. Seems he’s panicking about all of the bad publicity about the Super Dairy, and wants to table a resolution for it to be withdrawn as a project.
Brian reckons not. Andrew has also got Martin Gibson concerned.
But there’s more.
Brian’s panicking, so calls Debbie.
(I still find it odd that Debbie calls Brian dad, by the way)
The bees need sugar syrup
Oh I do (genuinely) love Jill and her bees.
She was checking their food stocks today, and reckoned.
So she left them some sugar syrup on the brood box.
Ah.
Lucky bees.
(though I have no idea what a brood box is)
Bert’s sorting Susan’s garden
Doe the promise auction Susan won.
Though Ruth’s not so sure that it’s a good idea:
But turns out it wasn’t Susan offended by Bert telling her what to do. It was the other way round.
Crafty.
That’s one way of getting Bert, Gary and Tracey’s garden sorted without Neil having to do it.
Jim accosts Christine (again)
And they both have a good laugh at Christine and Jim’s expense … which wasn’t very nice of them.
Later on:
So Christine, very uncomfortably, agrees.
Later on:
So, he calls someone to pay them a compliment.
It sounded like the person on the other end of the phone hung up, but Jim just reckoned it was a bad connection due to them being in the garden.
Christine is perplexed.
Jim then records the compliment he has just given, and asks Christine to sign his book as a witness.
As she does so, she notices her name, and his compliment about her perfume, on the opposite page.
Ah. The penny drops. And Christine now gladly accepts lemonade from Jim.
Later on:
Christine’s relieved, and quite tickled about Jim’s antics.
Ach well. There’s nothing like a good old British farce to help us into Spring.
Alice is going to get an Easter egg
Jennifer is going to buy her one to cheer her up while she’s studying so hard.
Oh, and she also mentions she might get one for Ruairi.
Wee mite that he is.
Brian and cricket
I didn’t think that Brian was that interested in Ambridge Cricket club. But Jennifer seems to think the start of the season will help him relax.
She also mentioned that Jamie had asked Adam to help coach the youth team, but seems he’s too busy. Adam is going to ask a friend (in Yorkshire of all places, Christine was very surprised to hear … how odd of her).
The village shop aggressively sells to kids
Even Jill is in on the act.
She wants to get the Easter eggs out on display specifically before the school bus gets back in.
Brookfield back on an even keel in 3 years
So reckons the consultant.

Andrew Eagleton is on the BL board. Seems he’s panicking about all of the bad publicity about the Super Dairy, and wants to table a resolution for it to be withdrawn as a project.
[Jennifer] “Oh the silly man. He’s just panicking unnecessarily, surely”
Brian reckons not. Andrew has also got Martin Gibson concerned.
But there’s more.
[Brian] “Even some of our loyal customers are fed up of driving past the protestors, and are thinking of going somewhere else”
Brian’s panicking, so calls Debbie.
[Debbie] “I won’t let that happen … Leave it with me dad”
[Brian] “If we’re going to save this project, we need to do some sharp thinking”
(I still find it odd that Debbie calls Brian dad, by the way)
The bees need sugar syrup
Oh I do (genuinely) love Jill and her bees.
She was checking their food stocks today, and reckoned.
[Jill] “A couple of the hives do feel a bit light”
So she left them some sugar syrup on the brood box.
Ah.
Lucky bees.
(though I have no idea what a brood box is)
Bert’s sorting Susan’s garden
Doe the promise auction Susan won.
Though Ruth’s not so sure that it’s a good idea:
[Ruth] “Susan’s quite proud of her garden, Isn’t she?”
[Jill] “Yes, I hope she doesn’t take his suggestions the wrong way!”
But turns out it wasn’t Susan offended by Bert telling her what to do. It was the other way round.
[Ruth] “He came back most disgruntled, instead of helping her to design and create a fantastic garden for Ambridge View, he was up to his elbows in weeds and a bit of old pram at number 6 The Green”
Crafty.
That’s one way of getting Bert, Gary and Tracey’s garden sorted without Neil having to do it.
Jim accosts Christine (again)
[Jill on Christine] “Between you and me Ruth, she’s a bit worried at the moment … well, it’s Jim. He was a bit effusive in complimenting her last week … that her perfume smelt alluring”
[Ruth] “Alluring, you’re joking! Does that mean there’s a December romance in the offing?”
And they both have a good laugh at Christine and Jim’s expense … which wasn’t very nice of them.
Later on:
[Jennifer] “Oh, here comes Jim!”
[Christine] “Oh dear …”
[Jim] “Christine, just the woman I need. I have something quite important to ask you … it’s about a phone call of some consequence I need to make this afternoon, and I need you to be present, if you don’t mind … it’d make a chap very happy”
So Christine, very uncomfortably, agrees.
Later on:
[Jim] “As it was such a nice afternoon, I thought it’d be nice to do this out of doors … are you sitting comfortably? Then we’ll begin”
So, he calls someone to pay them a compliment.
[Jim, on the phone] “It was a very rewarding retail experience … of course I am, perfectly serious … unexpectedly knowledgeable on the subject of ties”
It sounded like the person on the other end of the phone hung up, but Jim just reckoned it was a bad connection due to them being in the garden.
Christine is perplexed.
[Christine] “I’m sorry Jim, you called me over to listen to a phone call to a tie shop?”
[Jim] “Gentleman’s outfitter, if you please”
Jim then records the compliment he has just given, and asks Christine to sign his book as a witness.
As she does so, she notices her name, and his compliment about her perfume, on the opposite page.
Ah. The penny drops. And Christine now gladly accepts lemonade from Jim.
Later on:
[Christine] “You’ll never guess what Jim had me doing this afternoon …”
[Jill] “That sounds intriguing!”
[Christine] “Not in the way you or me were thinking!”
Christine’s relieved, and quite tickled about Jim’s antics.
[Christine] “The poor boy in the tie shop this afternoon clearly thought he was bonkers”
Ach well. There’s nothing like a good old British farce to help us into Spring.

Jim makes a play for Christine 16.03.12
(or so it seems)
The Archers Friday 16th March 2012
Now Tom’s harassing Helen
About phoning Kylie. Which she has done, but Kylie has called back as yet.
Does that boy never learn?
Leave folks be to do their best, in their own time.
Or, do it yourself.
It’s all Greek to Helen
Kylie does call Helen back. She’s been busy getting an essay in on time. One on Greek Tragedy.
Helen really does need to get out more. She’s staring to sound like a bit of a dim, as well as a dull, young lady.
Hilary Noakes’ cockatoo is feeling better.
So Jill announces.
More farmers sign up for the badger vaccination
Seems Oliver is managing to persuade more farmers to sign up.
Good man.
Jim worries Christine
Jill concurs that Christine is wearing nice perfume. But Jim takes it further.
Over coffee and cakes, Christine is too distracted to hear Jill talking about how glad she is that Brookfield is keeping its cows.
Ah well done Alan! You may have got Jim to do something for lent, but it could cost Jim one of his most precious friendships.
(I know – we all know they’ll sort it out)
Kylie says yes
During their phone call, Helen tells Kylie about Tony’s heart attack. Kylie shocked and worried to hear about it.
(she is a nice lass)
She tells Kylie that she wants to arrange for Rich to get to know his grandparents properly. Kylie is at first worried that Helen wants her to tell Rich, but Helen is merely after a face-to-face with Sharon. Which will take Kylie to help arrange.
Later to Tom:
Indeed.
Kylie’s agreed to talk to Sharon to at least meet with Helen.

[Jim] “Hmm, what a lovely scent … it’s you Christine. It must be your perfume”
Jill concurs that Christine is wearing nice perfume. But Jim takes it further.
[Jim] “Indeed it is. Most alluring”
Over coffee and cakes, Christine is too distracted to hear Jill talking about how glad she is that Brookfield is keeping its cows.
[Christine] “It’s Jim, I’m afraid … what he said … to me … he’s complimented me before, of course, on my cooking. He’s always praised my scones …
"the problem is what he said earlier wasn’t about my cooking, was it, it was about me … Jim’s never complimented me about anything like that before …
"never on anything personal or anything that you might call womanly about me … but today saying my perfume was alluring!”
[Jill, getting excited at the prospect of a romance] “Ooh Chris!”
[Christine] “No no. It’s not good Jill. I like Jim a lot of course I do. We get on well, we’re great friends. That’s as far as it goes for me. What if he’s started getting other ideas”
Ah well done Alan! You may have got Jim to do something for lent, but it could cost Jim one of his most precious friendships.

During their phone call, Helen tells Kylie about Tony’s heart attack. Kylie shocked and worried to hear about it.

[Helen] “I’ll be totally honest. What he’s been thinking about is Rich … now what’s praying on dad’s mind is he has a grandson who doesn’t even know he exists … I’m sorry to load this onto you …”
She tells Kylie that she wants to arrange for Rich to get to know his grandparents properly. Kylie is at first worried that Helen wants her to tell Rich, but Helen is merely after a face-to-face with Sharon. Which will take Kylie to help arrange.

[Helen] “She said something I hadn’t even though of. About Ivy … she only realised how sad that made her feel at Ivy’s funeral”
[Tom] “Well that’s a shame. But helpful to use, I suppose”
Indeed.
Kylie’s agreed to talk to Sharon to at least meet with Helen.

Tom realising Farming isn’t just pigs playing footy?
The word on the fields is that Tom’s realising how much work it is to keep Bridge Farm bumbling along. The admin is especially getting to him.
He hasn’t had a clue the sheer volume of work Tony had to do.
Why does Pip get paid?
Tom’s insisted on paying Pip.
Why not David and Brian?
Bit unfair, I reckon.
David’s perturbed it’s a young woman
David and Ruth are waiting for their block calving consultant to arrive at Brookfield.
Ruth started it, but David dug himself a whole. When she pulled him up on assuming that the woman couldn’t be the consultant (she’d assumed that the consultant wouldn’t be a woman because they were expecting someone called Rob), he started waffling on about women especially getting lost because of Sat Navs.
Turns out the woman is the Consultant. Rob couldn’t make it.
(the ‘tee hee’ bit is because she was a bit giggly)
Hmm. He also meant that it’s not really a job for a woman …
Mike thinks Jim’s playing for his woman
As they’re at the Community Orchard, with Joe, all you can here for a bit is Jim trying to waffle on normally, with Mike angrily digging in the background (honestly, you could hear it was angry digging!).
But Jim can’t taker Mike’s sulk.
As Jim points out, even Susan has agreed that Jim wasn’t trying to have his wicked way with Vicky. Mike’s still not convinced.
And Joe makes them shake on it.
Jim agrees. After Mike has left:
So an “innocent compliment” gone bad.
Surely more of this to come …
The end of the beginning for Brookfield
Lisa explains to David and Ruth that there’s a glut of milk late Spring and Summer – so their plan will mean milk ‘off season’. Potentially at a higher premium, I suppose.
They’ll need to expand their milking parlour and winter housing when they also expand their herd.
And Lisa says that their sheep can stay – they’ll be essential to income while their new milking system gets up and running, as will be their beef herd
(so they can please Pip and Josh at the same time)
All in all it’s good news.
And she’ll even do their cashflow for them.
(he’s still obsessed!)
Once Lisa has left:
Though she seemed a bit dizzy, Lisa is more than qualified to help Brookfield. Ruth and David reckons she is exactly what Pip will be like in a few years.
So it’s all systems go. And they need to look at reseeding again. This time cocksfoot, red and white clover, burnet, chicory, timothy and fescue.
So all’s well.
BUT
Where’s the £20,000 coming from for the slurry tank?
And, forgive me, but isn’t Brookfield now going to be having more cows in their shed for longer?
Ruth = not a leg to stand on regarding the Super Dairy?

David and Ruth are waiting for their block calving consultant to arrive at Brookfield.
[Ruth] “It looks like a woman driving, not a bloke”
[David] “She’s probably lost”
Ruth started it, but David dug himself a whole. When she pulled him up on assuming that the woman couldn’t be the consultant (she’d assumed that the consultant wouldn’t be a woman because they were expecting someone called Rob), he started waffling on about women especially getting lost because of Sat Navs.

[Lisa] “And I’ll put my wellies on … tee hee Lisa Bradshaw”
(the ‘tee hee’ bit is because she was a bit giggly)
[David] “Ruth, do you think she’s going to be okay … she’s not my idea of a consultant. How old do you think she is?”
Hmm. He also meant that it’s not really a job for a woman …
Mike thinks Jim’s playing for his woman
[Mike] “I got a bone to pick with you … what do you mean by offending my wife? … how long you been eyeing her up?”
[Jim] “Vicky?!? I’m sorry Mike, but I have no idea what you mean”
[Mike] “Oh pull the other one. You must have been ogling her for months, just biding your time for the right moment you could make your sleazy remarks which, by the way, she ain't happy about and in case you hadn’t gathered, neither am I!”
As they’re at the Community Orchard, with Joe, all you can here for a bit is Jim trying to waffle on normally, with Mike angrily digging in the background (honestly, you could hear it was angry digging!).
But Jim can’t taker Mike’s sulk.
[Jim] “For the hundredth time, when I said that Vicky was looking very slim, I meant it as a compliment. Pure and simple.”
[Mike] “Oh did you/”
[Jim] “Yes, and hand on heart I promise you mike, I had not been eyeing her up over the preceding months … and by complimenting her on her appearance yesterday, I most certainly did not mean to imply nor ever would that she previously had been fat, overweight, stout, plump or even chubby …”
[Mike] “Chubby!”
[Jim] “I like and respect Vicky, and I’m very sorry if I've offended her”
[Mike] “Well you have, Insulted her even … she’s very upset …”
[Joe] “Come on Mike, the prof here would never insult a lady”
[Jim] “My remark was well intentioned and meant as a genuine compliment”
As Jim points out, even Susan has agreed that Jim wasn’t trying to have his wicked way with Vicky. Mike’s still not convinced.
[Mike] “I suppose I got no option but to take your word for it Jim”
And Joe makes them shake on it.
[Mike] “But I got to say this Jim, but for an educated bloke, you want to be a bit more careful with what you say, and weight your words better …”
Jim agrees. After Mike has left:
[Jim] “I have to say that in view of the supposed insult, the idea of weighting my words is perhaps not the best phrase he could have chosen, but I wasn’t going to say that to him!”
So an “innocent compliment” gone bad.

And she’ll even do their cashflow for them.
[David] “How ol … hot about some coffee”
(he’s still obsessed!)

[David] “Okay, well I take back all I said, or managed not to say”
[Ruth] “That she was some dizzy girl straight out of college!”
Though she seemed a bit dizzy, Lisa is more than qualified to help Brookfield. Ruth and David reckons she is exactly what Pip will be like in a few years.
[Ruth] “Lovely and confident with it”
So it’s all systems go. And they need to look at reseeding again. This time cocksfoot, red and white clover, burnet, chicory, timothy and fescue.

Jim spooks Vicky 12.03.12
The Archers Monday 12th March 2012
Tracey has four kids
Counting her dad and Gary.
Though Emma was looking to her for some (probably free) babysitting, Tracey reckons she already has her hands full.
Emma is also furious to learn that Tracey also has the cheek to want to find a job – and had the nerve to see if Emma could babysit for her when she not at Lower Loxley in the afternoons.
Horrendous! How dare the world not revolve around Emma! Very surprised she’s still speaking to Clarrie after Clarrie went back to her job at Bridge Farm.
Anyhoo – point is that Emma can’t get proper babysitting sorted.
How long before she’s forced to ask Nic?
Helen never made mention of nappies
So Brian was fibbing when he said he volunteered Jennifer to do the veg box recipes because of Helen:
Pat’s a crusader without even trying
Brian’s bemoaning the fact that Pat’s petition against the Super Dairy is getting more and more signatures, when Pat obviously hasn’t been focusing on her campaign while Tony is ill.
He’s not as calm when it comes to the protestors at the Mart. They’re “loonies” who don’t understand anything.
Keira’s bored of being a baby
So says Susan. Keira’s started walking, which had made Keira very happy.
Jim’s threesome
Jim comes into the shop while Vicky and Susan are chatting.
It’s not, but Vicky’s is.
Jim then compliments (ah ha!) Vicky on the colours of said top being delightful, and that she’s looking “trim and slimmer”.
*sigh*
Jim’s not very good at this. He’s coming over as a bit of a perv AND you never (ever) mention a woman’s weight.
Whether it be a compliment or not.
Is that Brian under the tractor?
Yes it was.
Which gave Jennifer a fright. Surely that’s something Jeff could do (so she says).
He’s just trying to get his mind off of the folks who are against the Super Dairy.
Seems Lord Donald Eldberry has “fallen” for the anti-brigade, and has written to Brian as a result.
Jennifer admits that she’s worried Brian is going to do a Tony and collapse with a heart attack.
Emma appreciates the Doll House
Blimey!
That’s not like Emma to be thankful for the effort someone else has gone to for her (well, Keira).
A slight thaw?
Hilary Noakes’ cockatoo is ill
Aw – that’s a shame.
(and I do mean that!).
Susan warns Emma to make sure George doesn’t ask Hilary about her cockatoo as a result. Seems George is fascinated about it, but Hilary can’t cope talking about it (him?) at the moment.
It’s been losing weight and feathers, and has had swabs taken.
Neil warns Susan that she’s verging on gossip (which she had given up for lent).
Jim has spooked Vicky
Vicky’s round visiting Susan and Neil. She’s a bit perplexed.
Oh dear.
- Tracey has four kids
- Helen never made mention of nappies
- Pat’s a crusader without even trying
- Keira’s bored of being a baby
- Jim’s threesome
- Is that Brian under the tractor?
- Emma appreciates the Doll House
- Hilary Noakes’ cockatoo is ill
- Jim has spooked Vicky
[Brian] “I’m sorry I dropped you in it but I had to stop Helen talking about Henry and his nappies somehow”
Pat’s a crusader without even trying
Brian’s bemoaning the fact that Pat’s petition against the Super Dairy is getting more and more signatures, when Pat obviously hasn’t been focusing on her campaign while Tony is ill.
[Brian] “Here’s me packing their veg boxes, meanwhile her campaign is taking on a life of its own and is threating to stiff my business. It’s a funny old world”
He’s not as calm when it comes to the protestors at the Mart. They’re “loonies” who don’t understand anything.
Keira’s bored of being a baby
So says Susan. Keira’s started walking, which had made Keira very happy.
[Susan] “Bored of being a baby. She’s very bright, you see”
Jim’s threesome
Jim comes into the shop while Vicky and Susan are chatting.
[Jim] “What a bevy of beauty! You're both looking particularly delightful today, if I may say so … is that a new jumper Susan?”

He’s just trying to get his mind off of the folks who are against the Super Dairy.
Seems Lord Donald Eldberry has “fallen” for the anti-brigade, and has written to Brian as a result.
[Brian] “I’ve got councillors on the phone wittering about objections their constituents have raised, not to mention pen pushers in the planning department!
[Jennifer] “Calm down. I can practically see your blood pressure rising”
Jennifer admits that she’s worried Brian is going to do a Tony and collapse with a heart attack.
[Brian] “Oh, is this why we’ve been having all that weird food … mackerel and lentils … oh darling, you won’t get rid of me that easily. But any more lentils, you just might!”
Emma appreciates the Doll House
[Emma] “It's going to be gorgeous dad!”
[Susan] “Don’t let George say anything, it’ll only burst her into tears!”
Neil warns Susan that she’s verging on gossip (which she had given up for lent).
[Susan] “That was not gossip. That was a point of information to Emma … helpful not harmful!”
Jim has spooked Vicky
Vicky’s round visiting Susan and Neil. She’s a bit perplexed.
[Vicky] “It’s what Jim said in the shop … what he said to me about looking very trim … what did he mean ... well is he saying I've lost weight? Cause if so, how am I supposed to take it? Is he saying I was fat before .… that I looked fat then … what do you think Neil?”
[Neil] “Me?!?”
[Vicky] “Well you’re a man. If you tell someone she’s looking very trim are you saying she’s lost weight ?”
[Neil] “Erm, I don’t think I’ve ever said that to anyone, so I’m sorry Vicky I can’t be of much help”
[Susan, saving Neil] “I just thought it was a compliment … he said all that about me and my jumper, then he moved onto you. I’m sure it was a compliment”
[Vicky] “So why didn’t he just stick to saying my new top suited me or something. Nah, I’m sorry Susan. I’m not convinced”
Oh dear.

Susan and Clarrie have nothing to talk about 07.03.12
The Archers Wednesday 7th March 2012
No malted milks!
Jinks. Ambridge living really is a shocker.
Clarrie’s fetching the paper
On Pat’s say so, for Tony.
Didn’t take long for Pat to start treating Clarrie like a serf again.
Can’t gossip about Oliver
Oliver’s been digging over Joe’s garden, as part of the Promise Auction Jim bidded on for Joe.
But Susan has to stop her there. Clarrie’s verging on gossip (not allowed for Lent!)
After a bit of silence while Susan and Clarrie try to work out what they can talk about, Susan starts talking about Neil doing up her old doll house for Keira. Seems he’s finished the wallpapering, and is now touching up the paintwork.
Can’t gossip about Brian
Clarrie’s telling Susan that Brian’s back helping Helen with the veg boxes.
But Clarrie has to stop her there. Now Susan is verging on gossip.
Jim can gossip
Jim steps into Susan and Clarrie’s conversation.
But both Clarrie and Susan cut him off. It’s gossip. Even though they do desperately want to know what Kirsty said to Brian.
A rude parsnip
Helen’s showing Brian how to pack purple sprouting broccoli. He seems quite chuffed with himself for being able to do it, especially putting the elastic around the stems.
Simple pleasures.
As Helen stopped Brian talking to her about the demonstration (too controversial, with Helen obviously on the side of the protestors), and was mentioning that Pip is now helping Bridge Farm out with the milking …
Oh that’s a really nasty (nasty) thought …
The Hungry Gap
I never knew this – but the Hungry Gap refers to:
In cultivation of vegetables in a British-type climate, the hungry gap is the gardeners' name for the period in spring when there is little or no fresh produce available from a vegetable garden or allotment. It usually starts when overwintered brassica vegetables such as brussels sprouts and winter cauliflowers and January King cabbages "bolt" (i.e. run up to flower) as the days get warmer and longer, but sooner if a very hard frost kills these crops; and ends when the new season's first broad beans are ready.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hungry_gap
Helen normally just sends out recipe cards to give folks suggestions for how to cook what is there. But, she hasn’t got time at the moment.
So Brian offers her up Jennifer. If Helen sends over all the recipes she’s used before, Jennifer will sort them out and print them.
Well, I suppose it was time Jennifer was given something to do.
The WI big cake
Seems they’re making a big cake for the Jubilee picnic.
Well done WI.
Susan sets Alan on Jim
Susan sounds genuinely worried that she’s not managing with her ‘no gossip’ pledge for lent.
And then there’s Jim:
Alan concurs. And heads off to have a word with him.
Jim promises to apologise next time he sees her.
But Alan isn’t done …
Jim has to pay compliments
Alan pushes Jim to come up with something harder. Something that would be truly tough for Jim to give up. In fact, he pushes Alan to take on a “more positive challenge” …
So of course, Jim agrees (just as if Alan had called him chicken … what big kids they are).
I don’t quite get why having to give a compliment to a different person every day is such a tough challenge.
Is it just because Jim can sometimes be a bit scathing?
Is Brian thick?
Can he not see that Adam is still furious with him? Or does Brian think that by ignoring it, Adam will suddenly snap out of it?
They’re talking about the demonstration.
(though Brian doesn’t seem perturbed that Adam might have known about the demo … is Brian just assuming that Adam is involved in the anti-brigade, and doesn’t really care?)
Adam tells Brian not to assume the protest was a one off, and tells Brian to look at their website.
Which Brian does. And then thanks Adam for “the warning” as the website is saying they will be demonstrating again tomorrow.
Adam really isn’t interested. She sarcastically wishes Brian best of luck, but was basically saying ‘whatever’.
So, do we think Adam does have something to do with Kirsty and her protestors?
The Peregrines are back
Yay!
I was a bit worried when we heard Jim whispering:
But he was just trying to spot the peregrines. Lynda and Alan have seen them back at St. Stephens.
- No malted milks!

[Jim] “Oh dear. Still no malted milks. Oh well, it’ll have to be the digestives again”
Jinks. Ambridge living really is a shocker.

Didn’t take long for Pat to start treating Clarrie like a serf again.
Can’t gossip about Oliver
Oliver’s been digging over Joe’s garden, as part of the Promise Auction Jim bidded on for Joe.
[Clarrie] “Joe’s been a bit naughty really, telling him Harry would have done it better cause he’s so much younger … course Oliver, being the man he is, takes it as a challenge”
[Susan] “You heard about the demonstration at the market … it must have been very embarrassing …”
But Clarrie has to stop her there. Now Susan is verging on gossip.
Jim can gossip
Jim steps into Susan and Clarrie’s conversation.
[Brian] “From what I heard in The Bull last night … it must have been very awkward for Brian … Kirsty, right at the front, giving out leaflets to the farmers and Brian, rather ill-advisedly, I have to say, went up and tried to reason with her in front of the whole crowd and an Echo reporters, and you know what she said to him …”
But both Clarrie and Susan cut him off.
[Brian] “Good lord. What’s that?”
[Helen] “A parsnip. One of our rejects …”
[Brian] “Really? I’ve never seen one that shape before!”
[Helen] “I’ll give it to Tom. I’m sure he can think of something imaginative to do with it”
Oh that’s a really nasty (nasty) thought …

Susan sounds genuinely worried that she’s not managing with her ‘no gossip’ pledge for lent.
[Susan] “Me and Clarrie are running out of things to say …”
And then there’s Jim:
[Susan] “coming into the shop and trying to lead us astray. Tempting us with a nice bit of juicy gossip and trying to wear us down … you'd think he'd show more respect”
Alan concurs. And heads off to have a word with him.
[Alan] “Is it true you’ve been teasing Susan and Clarrie?”
[Jim] “That was nothing really … it was only a bit of harmless fine. I assure she knew I didn’t mean it seriously”
[Alan] “Well it’s easy for you to laugh, but it’s actually quite a bit deal for her … she’s really quite upset about it”
Jim promises to apologise next time he sees her.
But Alan isn’t done …
Jim has to pay compliments
[Jim] “I can see for Susan, gossip is her life blood. It’d be like me having to give up … doing the crossword”
Alan pushes Jim to come up with something harder. Something that would be truly tough for Jim to give up. In fact, he pushes Alan to take on a “more positive challenge” …
[Alan] “I don’t know. Pay someone a compliment every day … a different person everyday”
[Jim] “You really are serious?”
[Alan] “Of course, if you think you’ve got less will power than Susan …”
So of course, Jim agrees (just as if Alan had called him chicken … what big kids they are).
I don’t quite get why having to give a compliment to a different person every day is such a tough challenge.

[Brian] “And they’ve had leaflets printed. They’re not the usual bunny hugging nonsense. It’s a quite serious, well-argued piece of propaganda”
Adam tells Brian not to assume the protest was a one off, and tells Brian to look at their website.
Which Brian does. And then thanks Adam for “the warning” as the website is saying they will be demonstrating again tomorrow.
[Brian] “It’s a ruddy nuisance all the same. It’s just not what we need at this stage. And I think we got off so lightly at the public meeting”
Adam really isn’t interested. She sarcastically wishes Brian best of luck, but was basically saying ‘whatever’.
[Adam] “Brian, I don’t have any kind of inside information … I really don’t see why you’re so surprised about these protests … the power of social networking, word gets round, people take action, so what else did you expect?”
So, do we think Adam does have something to do with Kirsty and her protestors?
The Peregrines are back
Yay!
I was a bit worried when we heard Jim whispering:
[Jim] “Now then my beauties, where are you …”
But he was just trying to spot the peregrines. Lynda and Alan have seen them back at St. Stephens.

Clarrie is back in the dairy 02.03.12
The Archers Friday 2nd March 2012
Schmallenberg
The Schmallenberg virus has really passed me by.
Clarrie came across Ruth feeding a lamb. Though it was a bit shy from eating, Ruth was just glad it was healthy.
Which was when they started talking about the “nasty virus”. Seems Bill Oldfield has even told Pip she can’t go ahead with the Hassett Lamb project (celebrity lamb and such) until next year.
Seems the Schmallenberg virus doesn’t affect humans, but does damage unborn lambs, causing deformity or death. In adults, it causes diarrhoea, fever and a decrease in milk yields.
(more low milk yields at Brookfield – though also in the lambs is a bit much)
Seems the virus has come from Germany, and will cause problems for some time to come.
Who’d be a farmer …
The return of Clarrie
Ruth was telling Clarrie that David was at Bridge Farm helping out again, and that Tom and Helen are just about managing.
Clarrie’s just worried for Tony.
Adam’s over at bridge Farm later on offering to help drive tractors and the like. He was also surprised to hear that Brian had been helping with the veg boxes.
Helen and Pat are later talking about everything they have to work at. There’s the café launch, so Tom will need to get his ready meals sorted, and they the Ambridge Organics produce.
Seems Susan is also working evenings, but can’t keep that on indefinitely.
Especially with Tony not able to work, and Pat having to spend most of her time looking after Tony. Helen reckons they need extra help.
But Helen’s quite right that Clarrie hasn’t got work yet. And it’d make sense for Bridge Farm to ask Clarrie first, rather than having to hunt down someone completely new.
(meaning that Pat treated Clarrie abysmally over the e coli outbreak)
So, Helen goes round to see Clarrie, who is delighted to see her.
Clarrie is desperate for work, and we know she’s not one to hold a grudge, but there is something distasteful about how Helen and co treated here, then take her back when it suits them.
And how are they going to afford the extra wages again? I thought they were still skint? Or does Tony have insurance (can claim off the Government as well?)
Brian bought Clarrie for Jennifer
As we know, but Clarrie now has to do some swotting with Bert to make sure she knows what she’s talking about to Jennifer.
Just like Eddie.
Making only half a promise auction …
Clarrie’s not gossiping
Clarrie’s telling Ruth and David that Sabrina paid £85 for Harry, and that Sabrina wants harry to wait until the weather gets warmer to do the work in her garden (as we already know).
But Clarrie suddenly stops talking, and rushes away.
David’s being mean
In my humble opinion.
He’s on at Ruth again to talk about the farm. More specifically, he wants her to agree with them that they have no choice but to get rid of the dairy herd.
But David later corners her again.
He gets a bit aggressive, though also sounds upset. He wants Ruth to tell him what their plans should be, as she doesn’t want to sell the herd.
As much as David is right to force Ruth to make a decision, I don’t see how harassing and shouting at her will help.
Chris owns his own business
Though we didn’t hear it direct from Chris or Alice, Chris signed the contract today to buy out Ronnie.
Will that mean they can stop scrimping? Or is it only just the start?
Long term recovery for Tony?
Pat reckons Tony will have to just get used to sitting and being waited on.
Adam later tells Brian that he also thinks Tony is in for a long haul recovery.
Brian uses Tony to grind down Adam
Brian again asks Adam to “bury the hatchet”
(sure Adam would be delighted to if it was a real ‘un!)
They shake hands.

Adam’s over at bridge Farm later on offering to help drive tractors and the like. He was also surprised to hear that Brian had been helping with the veg boxes.

[Helen] “We’ve managed so far, but only by the skin of our teeth”
Seems Susan is also working evenings, but can’t keep that on indefinitely.
[Helen] “I don’t see how we can do it mum, not with things the way they are”
Especially with Tony not able to work, and Pat having to spend most of her time looking after Tony. Helen reckons they need extra help.
[Helen] “Someone who knows what they’re doing and can get straight back to work”
[Pat] “You mean Clarrie … we can’t just ask her now, out of the blue, after everything that’s happened?”
But Helen’s quite right that Clarrie hasn’t got work yet. And it’d make sense for Bridge Farm to ask Clarrie first, rather than having to hunt down someone completely new.
[Helen] “It might be easier coming from me. Less complicated”
(meaning that Pat treated Clarrie abysmally over the e coli outbreak)
So, Helen goes round to see Clarrie, who is delighted to see her.
[Clarrie] “I’ve been thinking about you all, wondering how you was managing … poor man … I can’t tell you how glad I am Helen.
(that Tony is okay)
“It was such a shock when I heard. And then waiting for new, I just didn’t know what to think … I wanted to ask, do you think he’d mind if I popped down to seem him?”
[Helen] “I wanted to ask you a really big favour … do you think you’d be able to come back and help us out … it would be p great for us if you could, but only if you really feel you’d like to …”
[Clarrie] “Helen, you don’t have to ask, well of course I will. Of course I’ll come back”
Clarrie is desperate for work, and we know she’s not one to hold a grudge, but there is something distasteful about how Helen and co treated here, then take her back when it suits them.

But Clarrie suddenly stops talking, and rushes away.
[David] “She’s done it to, given up gossip for lent!”
David’s being mean
In my humble opinion.
He’s on at Ruth again to talk about the farm. More specifically, he wants her to agree with them that they have no choice but to get rid of the dairy herd.
[David] “We’ve got to sort out this stalemate”
[Ruth] “Sorry David, I haven’t got time for this”
But David later corners her again.
[David] “Every hour, that you spend working with the cows, you’re doing it for nothing. Making a loss even. You’re gaining us one step closer to going bust … so we need to stop and make some time and come up with some answers”
He gets a bit aggressive, though also sounds upset. He wants Ruth to tell him what their plans should be, as she doesn’t want to sell the herd.
[David] “So what is the alternative … where do we go from here?”
[Ruth] “I just don’t know what to do”
[David] “Okay, we’ll take some time and have a think about it but we need an answer soon. You say you can’t live without the cows, alright, so you tell me, how can we afford to live with them?”
As much as David is right to force Ruth to make a decision, I don’t see how harassing and shouting at her will help.
Chris owns his own business

Long term recovery for Tony?
Pat reckons Tony will have to just get used to sitting and being waited on.
Adam later tells Brian that he also thinks Tony is in for a long haul recovery.
[Alice] “From the way looked this morning, sat in his chair in the kitchen, I’d say it’s going to be a while before he’s back to milking twice a day … I really felt for him. And after all they’ve been through”
[Brian] “I suppose there’s a lesson there for us all somewhere .. .life’s too short. I mean a thing like that, it could have been any of us, it could have been me,. So make best use of your time while you’ve got it”
Brian uses Tony to grind down Adam
Brian again asks Adam to “bury the hatchet”
(sure Adam would be delighted to if it was a real ‘un!)
[Adam] “If it were that simple …”
[Brian] “It’s just like I said to you the other day. All we have to do is respect each other’s opinions and agree to differ”
[Adam] “You can't just wish these things away, Brian.”
[Brian] “But surely we can agree to shake hands, declare a truth, or whatever you want to call it. Come on, for the sake of the family!”
[Adam, obviously fed up with being badgered by Brian] “Okay … yes, if you want”
They shake hands.
[Brian], ever patronising] “Good man, Well done. It wasn’t so hard, was it? ... It’ll make life so much easier for the both of us,. And your mother will be thrilled when I tell her”
Lily’s a bell ringer 01.03.12
The Archers Thursday 1st March 2012
Neil’s teaching Lily to bell ring
She seems quite keen.
Neil tells her to look straight ahead, not at the ceiling, and to do a backstroke 9though not of the swimming variety). Then there was something about the Sally (the fluffy stripped but), and both of them pulling on the strokes.
(no inappropriate jokes, please)
Neil reckons Lily has a “natural feel” as a bell ringer. And even gives her a go on one that hasn’t got its clanger tied up.
Wonder how long this fad will last …
Silly us … it’s all about Elizabeth
Neil was telling Elizabeth about how he’s been helping Jazzer with the pigs while Tony is in hospital.
Elizabeth tells him she’ll be off to see Tony today.
Of course! Just in case we forget that Elizabeth has heart problems too …
Tony’s warmed by truce with Jennifer
[Tony] “It’s a great weight off my mind too .. if it lasts … Grow up and start behaving like sensible adults again. At least there’s one good thing to come out of this”
True.
But will it last? Especially with the Super Dairy ever looming ...
Tom visits Tony
Tom’s been hiding behind farm work – he’s avoiding going to see Tony in hospital (the guilt is too much).
Tony asks Helen to ask Tom if he’ll come to see him.
Helen delivers the message to Tom, but Tom isn’t sure.
But the guilt steps to one side for a second to go and see his dad.
They chat about bulling and AI, then Tony thanks Tom for his “quick thinking” and for using his head.
With Tony also having made up with Jennifer, it really is happy families with the side of the Archer clan.
Now, if David and Elizabeth can make up … hmmm, unlikely.
Tracey’s smoking in the kitchen
And is well settled into living at Bert’s (well, it’s her house as well. Not that anyone apart from her and Bert know that).
Neil also mentioned that she was also constantly “missing” about with something.
Did anybody make out what?
Laughing at Susan

Silly us … it’s all about Elizabeth
Neil was telling Elizabeth about how he’s been helping Jazzer with the pigs while Tony is in hospital.
[Neil] “As far as I can tell, they’re getting by, but it must be a struggle”
Elizabeth tells him she’ll be off to see Tony today.
[Elizabeth] “Well as it happens, I do know my way round the coronary unit”
[Tony] “Saved my life. No two ways about it.; So, all in all, I’ve got a lot to be thankful for.”
[Tom] “I guess it’s lucky I came back out to the parlour when I did … all those things I said to you …”
[Tony] “It doesn’t matter now. Ancient history. I really don’t want to talk about it”
With Tony also having made up with Jennifer, it really is happy families with the side of the Archer clan.
[Tony] “So, come on then, entertain me, what’s all the news . .did I dream this, or did someone tell me Susan Carter is giving up gossip … for her, that must be like making a vow of silence .. .Clarrie,. oh blimey, it’s going to be quiet around the village”
[Tom] “Walk into the shop and you’ll hear …”
[Tony] “ … absolutely nothing!”

Tony wants to thump Tom? 19.02.12
The Archers Sunday 19th February 2012
Kirsty wants purple headed broccoli
Tony sorts her out.
Tom’s pushing Tony (and his luck)
Tony is still running the majority of Home Farm by himself.
He reckons he’s only just about caught up with tasks from last week (when Tom was away …
Surely it should be Tom that does the catching up?).
But Tom either can’t see that, or doesn’t care. He’s still on about tidying the farm for pictures and videos ahead of the next relaunch.
Tom was very generous in saying he’d “push paperwork” back to this afternoon if Tony would drop everything there and then to start tidying. But Tony needs to get the tractor out for doing something to the seeds bed.
Then, Tony intends to go to The Bull for a pint, after which he’ll have an afternoon snooze.
Later on, after Tony has had his pint (though he didn’t get a doze – he had to look after Henry!), Tom has yet another go at him.
But Tony hasn’t got time to talk about the yard again … sounds like he won’t, rather than can’t.
Tom’s to do list?!?
What an ar*e.
Alan bans gossip
It’s a rare eavesdropping in on Alan’s Sunday service.
He’s talking about what they (as a congregation) should do for lent – how “to prepare and purify selves” through making sacrifices.
He acknowledges that the giving up of Sunday lunch last year didn’t work too well (Eddie and Joe!), and that everyone is a tad tight for cash this year,
So – while the church will donate a regular sum from their weekly collection box to a debt crisis charity in Borchester, Alan also wants his parishioners to give something up:
Jill’s quite impressed.
When did Shula forgive St Stephen’s?
She seems to be going every Sunday.
Shula and Usha had a few chats when Nigel died, but I don’t remember Shula making amends and being formally brought back into the fold.
Now Jill wants Harry!
What on earth is happening to the women of Ambridge?
They seem to be on heat – and only for the (previously rather unnoticed, apart from Fallon) Harry.
And they’re right that interest in Harry will raise a lot of money.
David’s Choice … Pip, Josh or Ben?
Jill and Shula are talking about David and his woes.
Seems David is also worrying about Ben as well as Josh and Pip.
Shula and Jill are right that David’s kids could want to do anything, live anywhere, when they grow up. So he’s worrying too early about making decisions for Brookfield based on all three of his kids wanting to stay on and farm.
Yup. David AND Ruth.
Kylie’s coming back
Neil’s picking her up next week (she has a reading week).
Seems she’s friends with Emma on Facebook, and they’re been getting on really well.
Suppose it is easy to like Emma when you’re not actually in the same room as her.
Kylie’s visit will set off Pat and Tony again …
Tony V Brian: 3-2!
As Tony is having his aforementioned pint in The Bull, Brian comes in to talk to Neil about the forthcoming Super Dairy themed Parish Council meeting.
Tony warns Neil not to get bullied by Brian, but Neil reckons he can handle Brian.
Just as Tony proves he can …
3-2 and Full Time. Spoils to Tony!
A “phalanz” of BL
During the negotiations between Brian and Neil for the Super Dairy Parish Council meeting, Debbie and Brian each wanted a turn to present. And Martin to also sit on stage with them to answer questions on finance. The rest of BL will sit in the audience.
(lots of Martin related mentions at the moment. What’s afoot?)
So Brian decides Debbie will do the presentation.
And Neil insists that the audience can ask questions throughout.
Alistair still in a grump with Shula
Even Jill has noticed that there’s an atmosphere.
Seems Alistair is still annoyed about Shula’s executive decision to buy Topper.
Though Freddie doesn’t know she’s bought him. Seems Shula is going to keep that secret until Freddie is old enough to ride him.
Even though it’s caused a family split in keeping him.
Wonder if Tipper is Shula’s revenge for Alistair and Erin?

[Tony] “Don’t worry, there’s going to be an army of fairies to help me! … just relax tom. There’s plenty of time before the Felpersham relaunch”
[Tony] “You can sigh all you want. I deserve one afternoon off”
Later on, after Tony has had his pint (though he didn’t get a doze – he had to look after Henry!), Tom has yet another go at him.
But Tony hasn’t got time to talk about the yard again … sounds like he won’t, rather than can’t.
[Tom] “Why are you digging your heels like this? Don’t you want it to be a success … I want to tick it off my to do list!”
[Tony] “Stop haranguing me … look Tom, I’m not the lowly farm hand and you’re not my gaffer, so just back off, alright!!!”

So – while the church will donate a regular sum from their weekly collection box to a debt crisis charity in Borchester, Alan also wants his parishioners to give something up:
[Alan] “but not quite in the usual way …
“So the first challenge to you is to give up gossip … those negative and snide comments about other people, ones we’d be mortified to hear turned back on ourselves. It takes two to gossip remember, one to speak and the other to relish listening.
“The second challenge is that you go out of your way to perform random acts of kindness. That’s not like making your spouse a cup of tea, cause I hope you do that occasionally. No, I mean something really special. Putting yourself out. Giving of your own time and energy to help someone else for its own sake, you may find your kindness is returned to you …”
Jill’s quite impressed.
[Jill] “What an original idea, giving up gossip!”
[Shula] “Well I don’t know how someone is going to manage without gossiping …”
[Jill] “Careful, he’ll (Neil) hear you!”
[Shula] “Sorry, Susan will need to take a vow of silence!”
When did Shula forgive St Stephen’s?
She seems to be going every Sunday.
Shula and Usha had a few chats when Nigel died, but I don’t remember Shula making amends and being formally brought back into the fold.

What on earth is happening to the women of Ambridge?
They seem to be on heat – and only for the (previously rather unnoticed, apart from Fallon) Harry.
[Jill] “But I don’t think I’ll be able to afford him … there’s been an awful lot of interest from the young women in the village, and some not so young …”
[Shula] “I know, what a hoot!”
And they’re right that interest in Harry will raise a lot of money.
David’s Choice … Pip, Josh or Ben?
Jill and Shula are talking about David and his woes.
[Jill] “He feels he’s been forced to choose between Pip and Josh, because one favours the sheep and the other the cows”
Seems David is also worrying about Ben as well as Josh and Pip.
Shula and Jill are right that David’s kids could want to do anything, live anywhere, when they grow up. So he’s worrying too early about making decisions for Brookfield based on all three of his kids wanting to stay on and farm.
[Shula] “He and Ruth need to plan on the basis of here and now, not the what if”
Yup. David AND Ruth.
[Jill] “I don’t know how Ruth will cope if they do lose the herd, it’s so much a part of who she is”
Kylie’s coming back
Neil’s picking her up next week (she has a reading week).
Seems she’s friends with Emma on Facebook, and they’re been getting on really well.

[Brian] “Now there’s a tongue twister”
[Tony] “You know what I mean”
[Brian] “I take it you’ll be there on Friday, hiding behind Pat’s dungarees!”
(0-1)
[Tony] “Oh ha ha. At least we’re untied on this, unlike your family!”
(1-1)
But Brian reveals to Tony that both Lilian and Jennifer are in favour of the Super Dairy,
[Brian] “So that leaves you the odd one out amongst your siblings”
(1-2)
[Tony] “Same as Adam then! Pat’s gonnae wipe the floor with you on Friday”
(2-2)
[Brian] “Look forward to it. You know tony, dinosaurs died out because they couldn’t adapt”
[Tony] “That’s funny. I thought it was because there heads got so big they couldn’t hold them up anymore!”
3-2 and Full Time. Spoils to Tony!

And Neil insists that the audience can ask questions throughout.

The Bull is neutral 07.02.12
The Archers Tuesday 7th February 2012
Ambridge’s Jubilee Royal Oak
Has been planted by Alan and the kids.
Though they don’t know exactly what Royal estate the acorn originally came from.
Jill shocks Shula by saying that she’ll not be around to see the tree go – though she may see it if she gets to her hundreds:
Harry’s irritating Jazzer even when he’s not around
Poor Jazzer.
We still haven’t heard Harry utter a sound in an age – but he’s still managing to annoy Jazzer.
Jazzer’s in The Bull for a few pints, and was asking Fallon how many women are bidding for Harry in the Promise Auction.
Quite a few, it would seem.
Not that Jazzer is jealous …
Though he does seem a tad ‘disappointed’ that Fallon is also bidding. As is more or less every women in the village.
Jazzer’s disgust is palpable. Fallon suggests if he cares so much, may he should offer his services for the promise Auction as well.
Ruth comes into The Bull, so Fallon asks her if she’s going to bid for Harry.
Poor Jazzer. In Harry’s shadow when he’s not even around to cast it.
Lent ahoy …
Thank goodness for that.
I don’t think I could have coped with another Eddie and Joe Grundy scam/farce …
But the twist is that Alan’s not saying (yet) what the “something” he wants folks to so will be.
Trouble for Topper
(Nigel’s horse, which they’d sold (much to Freddie’s pain), though was at least stabled at Shula’s)
Shula gat a call from the chap who’d bought Topper (sounded like a Mr Stevis). He says his wife is ill, and he can no longer afford the livery.
Shula is very upset about it. It’ll mean they’ll have to find someone else to buy Topper, which will likely mean he’ll not longer be stabled with her. And she sees Topper as being part of the family.
She also knows Freddie will be devastated. Even though he has his own pony, he still spends time with Topper when he’s at the stables.
Ach come on – Elizabeth’s loaded! Just buy Topper back, and all will be well.
Say no to the Ambridge Mega Dairy
Is what Ruth (and Pat’s) posters say – encouraging folks to sign their online petition.
Fallon had said yes to Ruth putting the posters up in The Bull, but Jolene asks Ruth to take them back down.
Ruth’s fine about it, though Fallon reckons it’s a shame. She thinks The Bull is the ideal place – as it’s where folks “talk about everything anyway”.
But, Jolene already has rules about what can and can’t go up in The Bull.
Jazzer comes before the cows
Jazzer isn’t really for or against the Super Dairy.
He also reckons he couldn’t afford milk if he didn’t get it for nothing at work.
(eh? But he can afford pints of beer!)
Ruth’s shocked. He works at Grange Farm, which has an ethos completely opposite to the Super Dairy. But Jazzer agrees with Mike that the Super Dairy will be going after a different market, so his job should be safe enough.
Typical Jazzer indeed. As long as he’s fine, nothing else really scrapes a mention.
Battling BL Propaganda
Jolene tells Ruth that while she can’t put the ‘No’ Super Dairy posters up, Ruth could obviously try the old phone box and also the village website … though Ruth hadn’t been aware that there was already a Super Dairy article up on it.
When Ruth sees the article, she’s furious. It’s hardly a balanced article (making much of the onsite vets, but makes no mention that higher numbers of cows go lame and get mastitis). Ruth reckons the website article is just like the BL leaflets and “flashy” website.
Quite right Jolene.
Jennifer should have known better.

[Jolene, still saying no the posters, but …] “Seems to me the village website should be a bit like the pub. It’s biased, isn’t it? It should at least show your side of the argument too”
Quite right Jolene.
Jennifer should have known better.

The Archers Sunday 3rd April 2011: Horrible Mother’s Day for Kathy
click the 'read more' link below the bullet points to read the full post on this eavesdropping episode
Jamie will never leave if he’s allowed to sleep in
Jamie hasn’t gone home since he had his argument with Kathy on Friday.
And Jolene lets him sleep in.
Luxury for a teen – sleeping in, crisps on demand, and many opportunities to sneak a few sniffs of alcohol.
Course he’s not going home!
Worried about Jolene, not Kathy
On spotting the flowers Jolene is arranging, , Jamie’s a bit taken aback that they’re not from Kenton.
They’re from Fallon, for Mother’s Day.
He’s upset he didn’t think to get anything for Jolene.
But the boy ain't listening.
And he didn’t even mention that he hadn’t got anything for Kathy.
Aw! Sabrina’s not in leggings
Joe was round at Sabrina’s as she wanted him to look at her holly.
Well, her lack of holly. That he’d sold her. And promised would grow.
Eddie was first disappointed that he wasn’t allowed into Sabrina’s house.
But was especially disappointed about her attire.
Seemingly everything else in Sabrina’s garden is starting to grow, but she can’t see any sign of her holly. Joe managed to persuade her that a bit of growth was probably holly.
Clarrie gets the better of Eddie and Joe … with Jim’s help
Eddie and Joe can’t believe their luck – Clarrie’s off out again on a Sunday, this time to Will and Nic’s. And even though it’s Mother’s Day, Clarrie is still only having bread and cheese.
And, they’ve been asked round to Jim’s.
Which can only mean a slap up Sunday lunch, without Clarrie ever knowing!
Little do they know that Clarrie and Jim are in league …
And Jim does indeed look after them.
They have a roast dinner, pudding, cheese (which Joe points out is their third course, but is Clarrie’s only course) … and are about to have chocolate and coffee when …
So Jim’s charging them, to be paid back as lent.
Eddie and Joe are horrified.
Later on, to Clarrie.
But Eddie and Joe relent. They do only have two more bread and cheese Sunday’s to suffer.
Which I must say I’m glad about … this is all a bit of a farce beneath Ambridge, for me.
The beauty of braces
Whereas Eddie had to pop his trousers open after the meal, Joe was able to do so the moment he sat down, without exposing himself.
Quite.
What’s the bets on it being the wrong The Ghost
Odds on, I reckon.
Joe can’t get a copy of The Ghost (Robert Harris) from the library, and he won’t buy it.
Then Eddie has the bright idea that he can just watch the movie.
Of course – it’s bound to be the Patrick Swayze version.
Ho hum.
Kathy reveals all
Clarrie spots Kathy hanging out the washing, which Clarrie reckons she shouldn’t be doing on Mother’s Day.
So Kathy tells her about their argument, and Jamie staying at The Bull.
So that’s that then.
Clarrie knows, so the rest of Borchester will know about Kenton and Jolene in next to no time.
Just let him be homeless
Jolene’s trying to explain to Jamie that him staying at The Bull was only ever for a few nights.
Jamie’s not having it.
He’d rather sleep on a bench on the village green or a barn than go back home.
So let him! He’d soon grow up once he realises that he’s not as independent as he’d like to think.
But Jamie emotionally blackmails Jolene by saying that she said he’d always have a home at The Bull.
And she gives in.
That was far too easy, methinks.
What’s so attractive about Kenton?
Clarrie breaks the news to Eddie and Joe about Kenton seeing Jolene.
Poor Eddie.
You and Jolene were just never to be.
Which is quite good, as she’d never have had anything to do with Joe’s toenails.
Jamie arrives home … then leaves again
Ouch yet again.
So Jamie storms out and leaves Kathy crying.
Kathy’s not my favourite Ambridge resident, but this is all quite tough to hear. I do feel sorry for her. Jolene just takes every man Kathy touches … lover or child.

[Jamie] “I wish you were”
[Jolene] “And if I was, it’d be me who you’d be arguing with all the time”
But the boy ain't listening.
And he didn’t even mention that he hadn’t got anything for Kathy.

[Eddie] “Leggings? …not shorts????”
[Joe] “Tracksuit”
[Eddie] “Oh”
Seemingly everything else in Sabrina’s garden is starting to grow, but she can’t see any sign of her holly. Joe managed to persuade her that a bit of growth was probably holly.

[Joe] “Ten pounds each … Oh that’s nice, in’t it. Very Christian”
[Jim] “And cash only”
So Jim’s charging them, to be paid back as lent.
Eddie and Joe are horrified.
Later on, to Clarrie.
[Joe] “Ten quid each, how could you Clarrie? It was a mean trick to play on an old man (cough cough) … it was like a pair of Geese being fattened up for Christmas”
[Clarrie] “Yeah, I bet you were. Beaks wide open”
[Eddie] “Well I don’t know about geese … more like lambs to the slaughter”
[Joe] “I’m right disappointed in you Clarrie”
But Eddie and Joe relent. They do only have two more bread and cheese Sunday’s to suffer.
Which I must say I’m glad about … this is all a bit of a farce beneath Ambridge, for me.

Whereas Eddie had to pop his trousers open after the meal, Joe was able to do so the moment he sat down, without exposing himself.
[Joe] “That’s the beauty of braces”
[Clarrie] “Honestly, these things happen when they’re growing up … he’ll be back”
(Kathy should listen – Clarrie’s an expert when it comes to wayward sons!)
[Kathy] “It’s not just Jamie … I’ve had a row with Jolene. And he seems to have taken her side …. Oh why should I try to protect them …. It’s about Kenton. Him and Jolene, they’re a couple
[Clarrie] “No!”
[Clarrie] “And if you do go down the Bull, don’t be surprised to find Kenton serving you …”
[Joe] “ … Oh, that’s a rum do. He hadn’t been gone 5 minutes”
[Eddie, outraged] “Kenton … what does she see in him?”
Poor Eddie.
You and Jolene were just never to be.
Which is quite good, as she’d never have had anything to do with Joe’s toenails.
Jamie arrives home … then leaves again
[Kathy] “Sit down and talk”
[Jamie] “You don’t know how! …all you care about is yourself, and all you care about is what people in Ambridge think. And you can’t cope with Jolene because you’re jealous of her!”
Ouch yet again.
So Jamie storms out and leaves Kathy crying.
Kathy’s not my favourite Ambridge resident, but this is all quite tough to hear. I do feel sorry for her. Jolene just takes every man Kathy touches … lover or child.

Christine has a dental appointment
Which means it’s up to Jim and Lynda to show the engineer from Gardners Question time round the village hall.
[Jim] “He’ll sound out the hall, literally”
And Pete (the engineer chap) was seemingly quite impressed with the hall.
(The tension, it does mount …)
Matt Crawford: a keen Gardners’ Question Time listener
Who’d have thunk it!
Despite Matt seeming to turn back to his bad old ways after coming out of Prison (lying to Lilian, scheming etc), one thing has changed.
He has found a love for horticulture.
[Jim] “Would you have Matt Crawford down as someone keen to get his hands on tickers for Gardners’ Question time?”
Mais non!
But he did do a lot of gardening on the inside (wonder if he managed to get roses to grow? The Prisoner Cell Block H ladies seemed to do quite well).
Jim likes Shula
And all it took was Nigel to die.
[Jim] “Shula’s strength and character have really come to the fore over the last few months. She’s been quite splendid”
Kathy’s a clype!
Clarrie was already too aware that Joe and Eddie had been up to culinary mischief on Sunday, but Kathy told her all.
[Clarrie] “They says all furtive like, that they had to go down the field”
So not content with almost being caught, Eddie and Joe had later stole off to collect their dinner from the shed and the van, then took it round Fat Paul’s to eat.
Cheeky!
Clarrie also found a dirty carving knife in a drawer, on top of her clean towels. So she didn’t really need Kathy to say anything.
[Clarrie] “Stood over them until they told me the whole story … I’m that ashamed of them, Jolene …Kathy though it was funny. But no, they need teaching a lesson”
Cripes. Clarrie does sound proper angry this time!
The Peregrines have Lynda to watch over them
They’re back, and it looks like Lynda reckons they have eggs.
She’ll keep them safe from those church goers (a bit of bird poop never did hurt anyone).
Jim has chosen the next Book Club book
And there was no great surprise what sort he went for.
Lynda though he might be reasonable and plump for one of his ‘Roman Detectives’:
[Lynda] “One doesn’t want anything too challenging for the likes of Joe Grundy”
But alas … Jim started waffling on about some roman folks I’d never heard of, and how the book should be:
[Jim] “A work with a far higher purpose.”
Hmmm.
So Jim’s choice is:
[Jim] “Ovid’s Metamorphoses … 15 books … I shall select a couple and let people know … it’s not as if I expect people to read it in the original”
*sigh*
Even Lynda was hard pushed to explain to Clarrie what the book was about. She started grasping at ‘something to do with changing … shape shifting’ and the like.
[Clarrie] “Maybe reading that will change him (Joe) into something I don’t have to be ashamed of”
Boy! Clarrie really isn’t going to let Eddie and Joe off lightly this time. No indeed not.
Clarrie has a plan
She’s going to set Jim on Eddie and Joe.
[Clarrie] “But this is bad, Lynda, even for Joe and Eddie”
(on Jim saying he thought their plan to get their Sunday dinner was ingenious)
[Lynda] “Ingenious! It’s downright deceitful”
So Clarrie decides that Jim needs to sort Joe out, as Joe actually listens to him.
Worth a try, I suppose.
But what about Eddie? Who on earth will he listen to?
Show Scene ahoy!
Kenton and Jolene are meant to be taking it slow, but are quite clearly very (very) attracted to each other.
Have a small mope that they won’t see much of each other over the next few days due to Nigel’s inquest (amongst other things), Kenton admits he loves being with Jolene all of the time.
[Kenton] “The phone is not the same as holding you … I know we said we’d take things slowly … but when I’m around you, I’m finding it really difficult”
(“No!”, I thought to myself “is he talking about adult liaisons???”)
[Kenton] “If, or when, you feel ready to mo9ve things on. Just say.”
(“Yes … they are talking about shagging!”)
And just as Kenton is about to leave:
[Jolene] “Oh, um, Kenton … I’m ready”
Cripes! Lock your children away from the radio … it’s about to get steamy.

The Archers Sunday 27th March 2011: Eddie cooks Sunday lunch
- Eddie went down the supermarket!!!!
- When it started to go wrong
- Can one play games over the phone?
- Even Kathy is sick of herself nagging
- Lunch at Emma’s
- Emma doesn’t want no Fool’s baby
- Now that’s taking the chicken!
- At least Kathy and Jamie laughed together
- Clarrie arrives home
Eddie went down the supermarket!!!!
Now that’s not a very Ambridge thing to do.
Needs must though, I suppose.
And what did he get for his and Joe’s sneaky Sunday lunch (which they’re not meant to have, as they’re meant to be forgoing for lent).
[Eddie] “ A nice plump chicken, a bag of frozen veg, roasties, and some mini Yorkshires”
Joe seemed quite taken aback that mini Yorkshires exist.
[Joe] “How do they do that then, supermarkets?”
So there we go – by cheating lent, Joe’s food experiences have widened!
When it started to go wrong
For starters – Clarrie decided she’d return home after Church, rather than go straight over to Ed and Emma’s (as Eddie and Joe had planned, and cajoled, for her to do).
[Clarrie] “I don’t expect she wants me for dinner at all except you two has gone and got me invited”
Eddie was cheeky enough to then say that Clarrie going to Ed and Emma’s would be a treat and a rest (aye right - her and Emma haven’t exactly been getting on recently), and Joe was quite put out that it would mean his Sunday lunch would have to be cooked late.
[Joe] “She ain't going out til nearly dinner time!”
Both Eddie and Joe completely missed the fact that Clarrie was returning home, mainly to iron their shirts.
(at this point, I was very happy that the forecast for them getting away with their dastardly plan was not at all good).
Can one play games over the phone?
Now I’m certainly no technophobe.
I have an iPhone (4), a Wii (free with a previous phone), 3 computers in the house (2 for work), know how to Skype, and can still set a video recorder.
But, I don’t get why/how Jamie was playing against Marty over the phone.
Were they playing something online while calling each other? Or can you play a game on a phone while on a call?
Enlighten me, someone. Maybe it’s my age. I did turn a whopping 35 today …
Even Kathy is sick of herself nagging
I don’t know about you, but the shouting between Jamie and Kathy seems quite muted compared to previous bouts.
Kathy’s also just fed up of the whole thing.
[Kathy] “Sometimes I really get sick of saying the same things, just like you”
She’s on at Jamie to revise, which is absolutely fair enough. That’s exactly what parents are for.
But, as per, he’s being a sarcastic wee blighter, who is bluffing just to get Kathy to leave him alone. That revision plan doesn’t exist, does it Jamie …?
Lunch at Emma’s
(Ed’s as well, but he was running late so we didn’t get to hear him. Also sounded like his lasagne was going to spoil … though it was last night’s (always better) and Emma now cooks up big batches to see them through, which Clarrie highly approved of. Anyway, I digress …)
As it’s Lent, Clarrie can’t have any tomato, pickle or salad with her bread and cheese.
Poor Emma (and you’ll not often see me say that) feels rotten having to give Clarrie such a basic meal. Especially considering their rather lukewarm relationship, recently.
[Emma] “It don’t feel very hospitable, that’s all”
But, not to worry, as Clarrie appreciates the thought.
In case Emma was still paranoid, Clarrie then says she has to rush off.
[Clarrie] “It’s been lovely. And really nice of you to have me. I’ve just got this feeling about Joe and Eddie ..”
Uh-oh!
Emma doesn’t want no Fool’s baby
[Emma] “I don’t want it coming on April Fools day and I’m determined not to have it on George’s birthday”
Seemingly George is being quite clingy – probably hasn’t got over the jumpers being thrust into his (chest of) drawers.
I wonder.
It would give Will so much ammunition if Ed and Emma did have a baby born on April Fools. Even more so if they ruin George’s life by having it on his special day.
George being too clingy
Now that’s taking the chicken!
Not content with pushing Clarrie onto Emma (and vice versa) – not content with sneaking around Clarrie's back – not content with taking the Michael out of Lent … Eddie then more-or-less wishes Emma to have a problem with the baby so that Clarrie will have to stay, and give him and Joe a chance to gorge themselves.
[Eddie] “If Clarrie stays with her, it will give us a bit more time, won’t it?”
Such wickedness? Eddie!!!
They had no idea that Clarrie was on her way home, then, just as they’re sitting down to eat, the phone rings. And rings. And rings. And rings.
It’s Emma, who is a very patient caller, to say that Clarrie has left her glasses at hers.
[Joe] “Clarrie’s coming!”
At least Kathy and Jamie laughed together
[Kathy] “What on earth …? What are they doing??”
Kathy and Jamie can see all of Eddie and Joe’s shenanigans from their window (I think they actually live in the cottage next to them – semi-detached?).
They spot Eddie running to the van with plates of food, and Joe running to the shed with pots.
[Jamie] “The Grundy’s are the best thing about living in Ambridge. They are crazy”
As much as I berate Joe and Eddie for their behaviour, at least they gave us a few seconds respite from the war that is Kathy and Jamie.
Clarrie arrives home
[Clarrie] “Have you been cooking summit have you? You know. Cooking. Food. You put it in the oven raw. It comes out cooked.”
(Eddie swears his innocence. Laughing at the very idea of him cooking)
[Clarrie] “Yes you. Cooking. ha ha ha”
(those ‘ha ha ha’s were said in a very mocking tone)
Clarrie says she can most definitely smell chicken, not quite masked by her air freshener.
[Eddie] “Too much cheese. You’re hallucinating”
But – what’s this - a classic mistake!
In their haste to get the good grub, Eddie and Joe had forgotten to eat (or hide) the bread and cheese Clarrie had left out for them.
Huge mistake.
Even if only bread and cheese for lunch, Eddie and Joe would have been bound to eat it.
Unless they had something better.
So, treating them like bairns, Clarrie makes them sit down to their cheese and bread.
While their Sunday lunch goes cold in the van and the shed.
Serves them quite right.

The Archers Sun 20th Mar 2011: Kenton has his best jeans on
- “Look Dad, proper napkins and everything!”
- Joe at the book club?
- Excuse me Eddie - ‘pronto’?
- Plan C
- Leonie’s coming next month
- Jamie shouts at Kenton
- Jamie shouts near Fallon
“Look Dad, proper napkins and everything!”
Eddie makes it sound like Clarrie makes them eat out of takeaway boxes …
After having conned Lynda into agreeing that he and Joe could have Sunday lunch with her and Robert (as Clarrie was working – real reason that they want to avoid the Lent meal of cheese and bread), Eddie’[s well chuffed with himself.
But it doesn’t last for long.
For starters – Lynda has had to work. Which is Elizabeth’s fault for having to ‘borrow; Roy, leaving Grey Gables’ rota in tatters.
So, it’s Robert cooking. Quite bizarrely – he seemingly looks like a boxer in his cooking mitts …
First Robert brings out the brown rice.
[Joe] “Curry for Sunday dinner, that ain’t right”
Then he brings out the puy lentils (which is seemingly naughty, and Lynda musn't be told)
Numpties didn’t check whether Lynda and Robert were also doing this non-Sunday lunch for lent!
[Joe] “Eh, got any brown sauce?”
Joe at the book club?
Robert happened to mention that Lynda will miss the first meeting of Usha’s book club (due to the new rota, again), and that explained it’s a discussion group with nibbles and wine.
Joe sounded very interested at that point.
Here’s hoping he does join, and the next book is the Vagina Monologues!
Excuse me Eddie - ‘pronto’?
Now Eddie may have been severely disappointed about Robert’s Sunday Lunch, but there was nae need to be that rude to Fallon.
We all know what happens to your food in the kitchen you’re rude to waiting folks …
[Eddie] “Two portions of pasties and chips, pronto … check with Freda, it’s an emergency!”
[Joe] “I can still taste that boiled rice”
[Eddie] “All that chewing Robert made us do to make us ‘appreciate it’”
But then – foiled again!
Robert walks into The Bull, just as Fallon has headed off ‘pronto’ like to check Eddie and Joe can have their food.
Ha!
Serves you right chaps. A bit of common courtesy wouldn’t have gone amiss
Plan C
[Eddie] “We’ve got to get our hands on the means of production”
Which means they’ll try and get Clarrie invited elsewhere, so that they can cook their own Sunday lunch.
I have to say that I am losing my patience with Eddie and Joe this time.
Clarrie never gets taken anywhere – but they’ll ‘get rid’ of her to suit their own needs.
They then decide that they can pass Clarrie off onto Emma – despite the fact that Emma and Clarrie are barley being civil to each other, and Emma is heavily pregnant.
Eddie’s right that Emma isn’t incapacitated, but guests are guests – and we all know that a mother-in-law visit means – lots of tidying!
The tight-fisted numpties won’t even just simp0ly pop out to The Bull to buy their own Sunday lunch. They have to go about it in a way which inconveniences everyone around them
Surely they must come a proper cropper? Clarrie will find out – and all of their shenanigans aren’t exactly in the spirit of Lent
[Robert] “It’s quite humbly to feel some solidarity with the hungry”
Humble pie, Eddie and Joe?
Leonie’s coming next month
And Robert is quite relieved that she had a new boyfriend called Jay.
[Robert] “A dose of happiness will bring out her amenable side …”
Here’s hoping.
Though Eddie did mention that Jay sounded “like a bird”.
I get it, but I also wonder …
Jamie shouts at Kenton
[Jamie] “You got your best jeans on .. you’re going on a date, aren’t you … with my stepmum … I saw you getting with her last Thursday”
[Kenton] “It’s not a causal thing,. It’s a proper relationship”
[Jamie] “You just can’t help sleeping around!”
[Kenton] “What has happened with Jolene is for real”
[Jamie] “Like it was for real with my mum! You’re such a loser!”
If only Kenton had learned his lesson from the last time, and told Jamie before he found it by seeing him in flagrante.
I reckon Jamie does have a right to be angry and confused.
His mum’s ex. With his dead dad’s wife.
Ouch.
Jamie shouts near Fallon
Thank goodness Jamie does have Fallon, and seems to listen to her.
[Jamie] “So how come that slime ball is down there?”
(on finding out that Fallon already knew about Kenton and Jolene – and that they wanted to keep everything quiet)
[Jamie] “Why does nobody tells me things. It’s like I’m invisible or something … I’m not people!”
[Fallon] “It was a real shock to me an all, if that helps … what I’ve tried to come to terms with is my mum moving on, from your dad … I still can’t honestly get my head round it”
[Jamie] “It’s gross”
[Fallon] “But they do seem genuinely happy together”
[Jamie, sarcastically] “Oh well, As long as Kenton’s happy”
[Fallon] “I know he’s hurt you … I think he’s genuinely sorry”
[Jamie] “Sorry he’s been found out! …who cares anyway …”
[Fallon] “My mum’s dead choosy, you know … I know my mum wouldn’t want you to be upset”
[Jamie] “Well, she better look out, that’s all. He double crossed my mum and will do the same to yours …”
[Fallon] “What do you mean, double crossed?”
[Jamie] “He had this woman, he picked her up in Jaxx, Holly, who was like this real slag … it was the breaking point for my mum … I best Holly wasn’t the only one …”
Choosing not to hear anymore, Fallon suggests they watch their DVD.
But job done, Jamie..
Telling Fallon about Holly will make Fallon more suspicious – and she’s bound to eventually tell Jolene, or accuse Kenton of something he hasn’t even done.
There’s a Jamie sized wedge about to get between Kenton and Jolene, methinks.

The Archers Tues 15th March 2011: Eddie’s 60th birthday
- A treat after milking
- Emma’s toys are out of the pram
- Punctures, Chinese lanterns and other strange objects
- Lynda’s fallen for Joe
- A grand day out
- “It’s just one thing after another”
- Elizabeth does want to live, after all
A treat after milking
Eddie maybe a cheeky chappy at times, and doesn’t quite seem to realise how much of a drudge Saint Clarrie’s is (often because of himself and Joe), but he is a man who knows how to enjoy the simple pleasures of life.
He’s absolutely made up that Clarrie has made him bacon – and even more overjoyed that she’s also made him tomatoes AND mushrooms.
He even doesn’t grumble about having to do the milking first thing, even though it’s his 60th birthday.
And – Eddie makes all the right noises over Clarrie giving him a new tie for his birthday.
[Eddie] “Felpersham races, a picnic and a hundred quid just for betting with … today just gets better and better”
What a mighty good man.
Emma’s toys are out of the pram
Emma doesn’t go with the rest on Eddie’s birthday treat.
Clarrie doesn’t seem too fussed, but is starting to feel a teeny bit of guilt over giving her the cold shoulder at times.
[Clarrie] “I think she’s still a bit fed up with me. I’ll send her some party food back with Edward”
Punctures, Chinese lanterns and other strange objects
David’s not having a good day.
His trailer has a puncture, and he’s found a foreign object in one of the hedges which one of the cows has had a nibble on.
[David] “Stupid Chinese lantern … people have no idea”
A very calm and understanding Ruth gets David to talk about what’s really annoying him (actually – I think he already did have real reason to complain).
The real reason David is so on edge is because he’s worried about Elizabeth not making the tight decision about whether to get her pace-maker thingy fitted.
[David] “I just don’t get all this hesitation … It’s a no brainer, surely … she’ll have this procedure and she’ll never have another episode like the one on Friday ever again … why is she hesitating?”
[Ruth] “It’s a big thing for her … to get her head round. She’ll have this strange object inside her body … something that’s not part of her that she has no control over”
David reckons Elizabeth should only think of how this device is going to help her – and he was downright dismissive of Ruth touching on the fact that she knows exactly how Elizabeth feels.
[David] “(I want her to) see sense and go ahead”
Lynda’s fallen for Joe
That’s not like our Lyndee!
Joe’s managed to wangle an invite round to Sunday lunch at the Snell’s for himself and Eddie (so that they can avoid Clarrie’s meagre offering of bread and cheese, because of lent).
I’m surprised at Lynda being so easy to persuade.
Wonder if we’ll get to eavesdrop on that dinner conversation … the mind boggles!
A grand day out
And it just get better and better for Eddie – his birthday is turning out to be the gift that just keeps giving!
[Eddie] “That whisky fruitcake was a proper treat, that’ll brighten up me lunch boxes for the rest of the week”
Lilian brought champagne. Joe got a new cap. Clarrie chooses horses by colour (black and gold stripes), but doesn’t really want to have too much of a flutter:
[Clarrie] “It’s a bit too exciting when you put you hard earned cash on the line”
Eddie started off the day excited to have £100 just to bet with, but after losing £60, and dumping Lenny as his “tipster”.
But Fat Paul’s advice isn’t any better. Despite all their talk of being experts, Fat Paul, Lenny and Eddie haven’t had a winner between them all day.
Until the last race.
Eddie had sent Clarrie to put his money on a horse, but she went and choose the wrong one.
After the one Eddie thought he’d bet on fell over (but it’s okay – the horse was just fine …), Mine’s a Pint romped it home 20-1, giving Eddie a grand winning of £200.
Nice.
Think he’ll spend any of that on Clarrie?
I wouldn’t bet on it.
“It’s just one thing after another”
Johne’s disease is confirmed at Brookfield.
(nasty – here’s more info http://www.johnes.org/history/index.html)
Seemingly, the cow confirmed to have it could have had it for a while without showing any signs, and is likely to have had it since a calf. They pick it up from contaminated dung, straw or water
[David] “So that’s her down the road I suppose”
As well as slaughtering that cow, they’ll also now have to collect a dung sample off of every other cow.
Bollocks!
This really isn’t a good year for that side of the Archer clan.
Elizabeth does want to live, after all
And wasn’t David overjoyed to hear it!
After talking to the doctors and nurses, Elizabeth has decided to go ahead to have the operation.
[Elizabeth] “The nurse said to think of it like having my own little guardian angel on my shoulder”
[David] “Or your own hidden jump leads …”
[Elizabeth] “I decided nothing could be worse than putting mum and the children through that again”
Hmmm. Bit suspicious that Elizabeth sees herself doing this for the sake of others rather than herself, but I suppose the end result is still the same.
